Hey guys,
Let me start off by saying these are not for sale! Nor is this post to promote a product. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/285321_4851045186873_891323040_n.jpg Anyways, I've spent the last few months coming up with a design for a 30 round printable AR mag. To save time and money, the first test print was a 10 rounder with cheap plastic. Every printer is different, so some sanding and adjustments were necessary to get the magazine to function. This video shows a snippet of that. So that being said, I should be on the range in the next few days to fire it! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6v7kyME-1c On a side note, we aren't funded so this is all coming out of our own pockets. Though, I must give a nod to Patriot Defense Training, a local Michigan training company, who graciously gave us some of their equipment for research. We couldn't have have gotten this far without their help. But like I said, this can go only as far as our own wallets will take it as of now. https://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-snc6/226963_4851045346877_1259809504_n.jpg Any reasonable questions? Shoot! | What is the rough time to print a mag(I realize this will be printer dependent, but just looking for an idea)? What is the average time spent in performing function checks/sanding/forming? What is the most common issue to reject a mag(too thick/to thin/weak area?? |

Thanks for all the replies, I'll attempt answer what I can.
First off this is an alpha test print. This isn't the material I wanted, I just needed to do a 1st print to see if the design would physically work. I don't currently have footage of the mag being printed. I was working on a university printer and wasn't available at the time of print. I also don't know the state of the plastic before print. I do know that it took roughly 4 hours. Drafting up the 1st design took me around 10 or so hours on the computer to get the correct measurements for this particular 223/556 variation. The software cost me roughly $1K, and the printer (belonged to the university) but cost right around $10-20k. After the print, I did a bit of sanding- 15 or so minutes. This specific printer automatically added support structures during the production which left artifacts that needed to be sanded off later. To the point: This is the problem with Defense Distributable. They have free files on their site for anyone to download. Fantastic, now load that file into your rifle and shoot! Wait...that doesn't work. How about sending the design to a major company? Good luck keeping that file up very long. Good luck printing a receiver!!!!! No offense to Mr. Wilson, but he isn't solving a problem for anyone but himself. He isn't going to print pieces out for you. 99.999% of his audience has no such access to this equipment. Companies that do, refuse to print weapon related objects. If a PMag costs $1,000, you're better off buying that than a $10,000 printer to make your own! I'm not great at analogies but I hope you see my point. I want to answer this problem. I have the solution. We need a company that isn't so "politically-correct" and will take this task on. External companies all do not take requests! Need a 50 round Glock 9mm mag? "Good luck making one," is what any printing company will tell you. I currently have that skill and I would like not to hoard my skill, but share it with a community that sees how screwed up this country is and has the power to fix it. I'm currently saving up for my own machine. Maybe more than one in the far future. I've received a few small donations but everything helps. Unlike most firearm owners I not only have the design know-how, but the community connections on both sides of the spectrum. I can make this happen. You need a 50 round Glock Mag with your personal emblem on the side? Great, I'll have it designed this afternoon, printed tomorrow and shipped ASAP after it has been function tested. This is my idea. I'm just lacking the funding to do it. DefCad can get hundreds in donations a day and at the end of the day, where is YOUR magazine? Mr. Wilson has his.. I want to put that 30 round printed magazine in YOUR hands. After all that's where it belongs. I'm not sure what ar15.com's rules about donations are...so I won't outright mention or ask for such yet. I just want to lay all of my cards on the table and let you know a community effort can make this happen. I can't do it by myself and neither can you. Side note: We have an AR Lower and accessories printing. AND and are the 1st to be print AK receiver! |
