Who does this and why?

I've read a few posts of people saying they mix TAP (or whatever defensive round) with M855 to make it stretch the box of ammo or just to give you a variety in case they are wearing a vest or whatnot.

Anyone do this or was I reading retarded posts?

I think any round is a good round to shoot someone with out of a rifle. No need to mix and match,

The ONLY way this makes any sense is Military loading a couple tracers at 24-25 round to say hey its time for a fill up. Civilian use not so much.

I could see if you had a penetrating round every so many rounds compared to only expansion rounds as a just in case these are not doing the job.

No one does this anymore, for various very smart reasons.

In a battle with little or no cover fire Yes very stupid. In a group of guys this has merits. As to the regular guy candy caning a penetrating load with a not so much load. You are responsible for the final resting place of your round. Not knowing what is next is stupid.

and we were never "supposed" to.

Standard load is 4:1 tracer on top.

For linked ammo maybe.

I thought that it was more common practice for any Fully automatic weapon, linked or mag fed?

The only thing I have hear of were people stagering every other round Penetrator then hallow point or soft point all of the same grain weight and FPS is possible.

I'd be less concerned about the bullet weight and velocity, and more about the bullets being able to strike the same spot.

Different bullet types have different profiles (ogive radii, tail angle, bearing surface, etc) and interact differently with the barrel. So a 62gr copper solid going 2800fps is most often not going to behave the same as a 62gr SS109 going 2800fps. Defensively speaking, knowing where your round is going is far more important than having the most souped up mil spec +P+ round possible.

I would not mix ammo in the same mag solely on general principle.
AFAIK all 5.56mm rounds will penetrate a vest and none will penetrate a ballistic plate at HD ranges.
The only exception I know of is the dragon scale vest which is essentially one large articulated ballistic plate.
