I bought a bag o'mags from a friend today, old mil-surp things, various makes. One had this little thing added to it :

You military guys are probably familiar with it. Slice off about a 2" length of para-cord, pull out the guts, melt both ends to get a nice glob, slide floorplate back over the ends. Supposed to aid in extracting the mag from pouches. I may try this on some.

ETA: seems very sturdy, doesn't give a bit.

ahh yes, the pre ranger plate 550 pull plate. i will tell you that while i was in Iraq, i had one of these setups go bad. the glob at the end of the string somehow got wrapped around one of the coils on a fully loaded mag spring, and it wouldnt push up the rounds.

LUCKILY, i found this badboy when i was rotating my mags out, right in between Fallujah and Ramadi ( the attacks, and strangely enough, physically too! i was Infantry, the only unit station between them covering the 10 mile MSR)

there are 2 fixes to this issue, 1) an inch strip of 100mph tape around the base of the mag, and after the first layer, take the 550 with REALLY large knots on the ends, and lay them on each side, then put 3 or more layers on top, tightly. this also makes sure that the magazines dont clack and make noise off of each other, and keeps them quiet even when dropped.
2) take the 550 and a soldering iron, and melt a very large amount to the bottom of the plate (the ends), basically making a layer of 550. just makes it so its only attached to the bottom, and cant obstruct the coils or the follower

I like the idea of using the 100 mph tape, saves messing with the base plate. I've got this bag of used mags and plenty of 550, gonna try that. Thanks for the tips!

Another option instead of paracord is that flat heavy gauge plastic strapping used to strap stuff to pallets for shipping.  Another benefit of that stuff is it's kinda springy so the loops stay stuck out.

I never liked doing stuff like that to my mags. Then again, I had a different setup than most, as well.

Put magpul ranger plates on all my ar mags and then discovered pmags.  The old mags sure look good even though they are tucked away in a box in the closet.
