Can anyone please provide info from experience on the selection of mags for an AR?  Poly, aluminum, stainless??  Why one over the others?

PMAG

ETA:  They also have a version with a window in the side that many prefer.  Once you hold one and compare it to a metal mag, you'll understand.

Hmmm.... never tried one of those, but they look mighty nice.  Much cheaper too.  *sigh*  Going to have to buy more mags.  Damn.

PMAG is all you need to know, but if you like the GI mags you should at least have magpul followers in them.

I love PMags and they are all I have except (2) 30 round and (2) 20 round GI mags, but I have been strongly eyeing the Lancer L5 AWM mags as a competitor against PMags.

Tango Down doesn't even get a mention ?  If you are looking for cheap range mags, cdnn sports has good prices on mags.  $3.99 for 20rd poly, $6.99 for 20rd teflon.  Sorry, I'm a fan of 20 rounders, I'm sure 30 rounders are only a few bucks more.

If you're looking for more self-defense/combat, I'd say p-mag or tango down.

USGI

I use Brownells and Colt, but others such as OK Industries are said to be equally good.

I'm sold on BCM and Magpul. I bought enough that I won't learn about any others for a few years.

I have lot's of P-mags but still prefer USGI (with Magpul followers). The mag faqs have lots of good information, but many prefer pmags. I don't. Freedom of choice is a great thing.

CP is out of business.
In aluminum I use Brownells USGI and D&H.
In polymer I use Lancer and Magpul.
In steel I use Fusil.

I have some NHMTG 20's i run a lot and have no problems with. Otherwise I run 20 and 30 round p-mags. I have a few others, mostly 30 round c-products, but I don't use 30's that much and odds are when I do it's a P-mag just because I've got more of them and a half the C-Products 30's are still in wrappers.

I do think it's amusing that all my non P-mags are local production for me and not one was bought locally.

Preferences are NHMTG (USGI) and D&H. I do have both 20 and 30 round PMAGS but I prefer those two I mentioned first.

i have AWM mag and although it's been 100% reliable so far, it just feels cheap compared to a PMAG.

Absolutely P-Mags, and C Products with the "Orange" follower. Honestly.........when I get bored with the look of either one I just switch.  Both run good.

for a range mag that May get lost/ stolen or damaged I like the themold magazines that midwayusa sells, they run like $5 for a 20 rounder, I have 3 of them and they work great. I have about 500 rounds trough one and not an issue.  they are also shorter and llighter then usgi mags.

I also have 3 Pmags and they work just fine so do the usgi 30 round magazines
