Is it bad to keep a loaded mag locked in the gun with the bold closed ? I use this weapon for home defense.

Does this do any harm to the lower or the bolt or even the magazine?

I am running preban magazines and I would hate to hurt one of the magazines.

Do not fill the mag to the top leave 3 or 4 rounds out.  I keep a mag loaded in my AR in that condition all the time.  PS  you can buy more hi caps now the ban expired.

OP looks to be in NY, so that's a no-go.

It's not bad for the magazine or the rifle, but it does make it a bit difficult to seat the magazine. The AR15 was designed to be loaded with the bolt open. With the bolt closed a fully a loaded magazine has about 1\2 a rounds width of compression left in the spring. Downloading the magazine to 28 rounds gives you enough room in the magazine for the rounds to move down as they hit the bottom of the bolt.

Download by 1 round for USGI mags, or get P-Mags which are designed to be able to handle that extra bit of compression––called a "tactical reload" with the bolt closed.

completely unnecessary to leave ammo out unless you have some funky, extra tight mag.  put 30 rounds in it and slam it in GI, pmag, or otherwise.  magazines are left with space enough to be inserted on a closed bolt for various reasons.  ive put countless GI mags in on a closed bolt, infact thats how we were required to carry m16s/m4s while stateside.

as far as leaving it loaded in the gun, it wont hurt anything.  unfact, it puts less stress on the mag to have it loaded in the gun than it does to leave it loaded on the shelf (keeps pressure off the feed lips).
