I am thinking about building another AR and am considering one of the Russian calibers like 7.62x39 or the smaller 5.45x39. However it does not appear like they have their own mag type. So my question is will the 5.45x39 fit in the standard AR mag and what about the 7.62x39? I just do not want to put together a rifle that is hard to get mags for. I will appreciate your help

From experience I know that 5.45 is best in Cprod mags that are made for it, though many people do partially load in 5.56 mags, but function and feed is not guaranteed.

I don't know anything about 7.62x39

7.62 was a cluster to find mags that would feed flawlessly.  C-Products sometimes worked.  Got rid of the upper, no more worries.

So would I be better off steering clear of the Russian calibers? I bassically want another AR in something other than 5.56 NATO, I already have several and wanted something else that I could use and get ammo for in the event of WW3, an apocalypse or whatever, I know not likely but still I like to be preparred for whatever. I do not care for the AK's, they are reliable but not accurate and that is why I was considering an AR in one of the Russian calibers. 6.8 is a hard to come by ammo so while I want to eventually build an AR in 6.8 I cant use it for the intended purpose of having something accurate and in another easy to find ammo caliber. So what would you guys suggest. I have never even shot an AR in 9mm, does anyone have any exp with that. I have seen 2 different types of mags for a 9mm AR, 1 just a straight stick mag and the other looks like the straight stick mag along with a block added to the top.

There's nothing wrong with the 5.45 so long as your upper is good (no keyholing.)

Mags are readily available and not too expensive, and the ammo is cheap to horde on.

Just doesn't use 5.56 mags is all I was saying.

9mm AR's have different blocks for various mags. Uzi, Mac, Glock....you know..

I use a 9mm AR.  It is really fun to shoot.  Never an issue with finding ammo.  Several mags to choose from and many work fine.  I use C-Products mags in mine, never a problem.

Well I usually buy my stuff from Midway USA and do not have exp with other suppliers. I have looked at Midway and it seems like they only have mags for the 5.45 that come with the upper and same thing with the 7.62 leaving you with just the 1 mag that comes with it. As far as the uppers go I usually get bushmaster uppers as I have always had good luck with them. Where would be a good place to get mags for the 5.45 Russian? As I said I have never had exp with any of the 9mm AR or the Russian caliber AR's other than i have shot one in 5.45 that belonged to another guy at my range. I would appreciate ideas on where to get mags for the 5.45 and also opinions on which type of mags work best for the 9mm. Also some pics of the blocks you guys are talking about so I have an idea. I might build a 9mm AR and a 5.45 AR. I appreciate the help

C-products mags for 9mm from 44MAG (site sponser and free shipping).
Spikes for 9mm mag block.  Shop around for that one.  The price is $134 but shipping varies from distributors.

I found the Spikes Tactical website and the magwell block so that takes care of that. Now with the multiple types of 9mm mags, in your exp what seems to be the cheapest & easy to find mags while still being reliable and I want a min of 20rd mags but would prefer 30 or 32 rd mags. I also found the C-Products 5.45x39mm 30rd mags, now I am new to this site and have never owned and C-Products mags, so how reliable are they? One last question is about the 9mm AR, being that I have never owned or shot one I am currious as to what the velocity & energy is like coming out of a 16" barrel instead of a 4" or 5" barrel? I know that is sort of the topic of the mags but I thought one of you could give me an idea of what to expect.

Some of your questions are way off target for this forum.  Some of these should be posted in the pistol calibers forum.

I appoligize & will re-post the velocity question in the pistol caliber forum. I just thought someone could answer it since the one guy said he has one. Again I am sorry & I even stated I knew that one was a little off topic. However the remaining questions are all mag related.

I have no exp with C-Products mags. Mainly I have original Colt, FN, Charles Daley and AR Stoner AR mags so I am wondering how reliable are the C-Products AR type mags for the money. I have only used one brand of AR mags that cheap before so I want to make sure I do not waste my money.

Now for the question about which type of 9mm AR mag will be the cheapest and easy to find while being reliable and atleast 20 rds or more up to 32rd mags. Unfortunately Beta mag drums are out of the question. I live in OH & we have a very stupid law where the state will charge you possession of a full-auto machine gun even if it is really a semi-auto but is capable of holding more than 32 rds. So with the Beta mag drums out of the question, what is my best option for the type of mags. I would really like to find out you guys opinions, I would rather not play hit & miss or trial & error.

I pretty much plan on using the Spike Tactical mag adapter. So from the Spikes Website the following mags are compatible Spikes Tactical, Metalform, Modified Uzi, Pro Mags, Colt & C-Products are compatible. Which seem to be the most reliable while being cheaper & easy to find.

Looks like you're going the 9mm route, but I'll provide a little input on the 7.62x39 for the heck of it.

You're right that the 7.62x39 has its own dedicated mag.  I've tried to load 7.62x39 in standard 5.56 AR mags and can get only a few rounds in the mag before binding occurs (if memory serves, it was 4 rounds).  I haven't even tried actually feeding the gun using the 5.56 mags.  I'd be surprised if it worked.

My C-Products 30-round mags, after a brief break-in period, have been completely reliable in my factory Armalite upper.  As far as availability, the mags aren't hard to get.  Find an online supplier with them in stock (44mag.com lists 5, 10, and 30 round in stock as of this writing) and order.  The 30-round mags are more expensive than, say, Pmags, but even so a handful won't break the bank.

Good luck whatever route you chose.

FYI Charles Daley were (they are no longer in buisness) and AR-Stoner mags are made by C Products.

For the guy who mentioned about going 9mm or the Russian calibers. I plan to build atleast three more AR's, one in 6.8, one in 5.45x39mm and one in 9mm but also would like to build one in 7.62x39. Basically, I would like to have all 3 but possibly 4 done by this fall at the latest.

Now about the mags for the Russian calibers. I am currious about you guys who have a 5.45x39 and 7.62x39 AR's I have some concern over the size of the mags. Seeing them on a computer screen is nothing like seeing them in person when it comes to comparing size & shape. I have noticed especially with the 7.62x39 that they appear significantly longer and bananna shaped and the 5.45x39 appears to be just longer. I am slightly concerned about the extra size because I do a lot of bench and prone shooting and am concerned they could possibly get in the way. So for you guys who have AR's in these calibers, do the mags get in the way for bench & prone shooting and would I be better off using 20 rd mags

I had no idea that AR Stoner & Charles Daley mags were made by C-Products. I have always had good luck with the AR Stoner mags with the exception of an ocasssional sharp edge and the same goes for the CD mags except they usually have alot of sharp edges but I just clean the edges up and I Duracoat my mags to match the Russian Army duracoat pattern of my AR's. I had recently picked up a bunch of CD mags at a local sporting goods store as they were clearenced for $8 each until I bought them out but I guess they wanted them gone before a new supplier stock comes in. Besides the sale I picked them up because I recieved notice from my ammo supplier that there is a potential high capacity magazine ban that has been proposed. Thanks for the info about C-Products, I guess that answers my their reliability since I have used them and did not know it.

Lastly, I appreciate everyones help. I know almost everything I need to know about the 5.56 AR's but I would be lost as I breaking into an entirely new category and am dumbfounded while looking through the Midway catalog. This website and its members are fabulous.
