I've got 20 round and 30 round magpul magazines and I was wondering when you store a loaded magazine if it is safe to load a full magazine and store it, or if you should leave it at 3/4 or what?

My understanding is you can leave the magazine fully loaded and can either use the cover or leave it off

Use the cover with p mags unless it is inserted in a rifle.

As posted above, keeping a mag fully loaded will not wear out the spring.

My grandfather gave me a few vintage Airforce contract Colt AR15/M16 20 rd. magazines a couple years back.  They were loaded with ammo that was headstamped 1974.  I asked him how long they had been loaded, and he said it was sometime in 1974, because that was when his (former) friend made off with his SP1.  He said he just threw the mags in a box and they sat there until he gave them to me.  I fired all three magazines as they were and they all functioned 100%.  I have ran numerous rounds through them since without a problem.

Even Magpul doesn't tell you to do this.  They posted this on this site the other day.  The orginal recommendation was because the mags were a new product and they didn't, at the time, know how they'd hold up.

I just fired a Foliage Green Pmag that I had stored loaded for like two years in a sub load....  not a single problem... the mag is a good as it was new.

Arfcom lore then.  That was the rule not long ago....in order to keep the pressure off the feed lips.  Once again, I'm behind.

I've read the feed lip issue occurs with aluminum mag and not so much with polymer. I would personally keep the MagPul covers on loaded mags just because I'm OCD, but it's nice to know you don't have to. I have since unloaded all my aluminum mags.

I've got some fully loaded myself. No problem with them.

Nah... Magpul was just being conservative.

It happens on aluminum mags that get used a lot.... not stored loaded.  I've got USGI mags that have been stored for 8 years loaded in my Deuce gear.

Feed lip creep starts from the banging of rounds being fed up from the body over thousands of cycles of the weapon.
