I have 8 AR15s. How many magazines should I realistically have?
Cute answers that are not acceptable: " As many as you can afford" or " You can never have too many". |
Load up 30 mags and see how far you can carry them in bag. Realistically it depends on the shooter. I personally prefer 30 mags per gun....why? Who Knows Honestly mags are cheap (PMags) so why not have lots stored away. Those older than me that lived through the ban have a greater appreciation for stocking up. I heard somewhere that history repeats its self |
|
If all 8 are to be utilized or counted on as defensife multipliers than I would suggest 10 mags for each gun. So 80 mags.
If you are simply collecting / building, target shooting and hunting than an assortment of different mags is prefered. The # is up to you. I have 4 AR's and have 10= 20rnd mags, 40= 30 rnd mags and 2= 100 rnd beta-c mags. At any given time I have 4-5 mags loaded on top of my safe and 4 in each of my 2 pick up trucks to feed my 2 SP-1 truck guns. |
|
i have a dozen pmags that are good to go, i've function tested them. They run, and run well, along with a few Alum. GI's.. these are my loaded, reserve mags I also have about 2 dozen that are training/competition mags. They also run, and run well, but are abused on a regular basis and cycled out if damaged beyond use. I also have 15 new pmags in wrapper that just arrived... |

So your just looking for an absolute or arbitary number? Okay:
If it counts for anything; combat load is 210, so I would say 7. But if your doing alot of shooting and moving your gonna loose some; so I would say 14. But mags can be finicky, so I would say 21 to account for the occasional bad one. Yeah, 21 is the absolute number of mags you need without question. Any more and your endangering children and are possibly a Right Winged Extreemist. P.S. I need more mags
|
| There are some things to keep in mind. Some of your mags will be damaged. Like Displacement said, some will be lost if you shoot and move. This is especially true at night. You may want to share with your comrades. Mags are available and inexpensive now. That could change quickly. To give you a number, I don't think that 100 P-mags is too many. |

Think long term....very long term....as in what can you pass down to your kids since mags get damaged etc...and they may not be legal to buy when your kids are older! Therefore...at least 200 + Agreed, with that many AR's 200 is not un-reasonable. If they do get banned, you'll wish you had more. Here is a great deal going on now... http://dsgarms.com/index.cfm/product/2227_25/black-teflon-coated-30-round-anti-tilt-ar15-m16-magazine––-10-pack.cfm...and.... http://dsgarms.com/index.cfm/product/175_25/grey-teflon-coated-30-round-magazine.cfm And there is always ....44mag...frankly my favorite, he has been sellin' us Gunny folk, cheap priced mags through out his history. Kudos to him ! Honestly, after shooting for 25+ years I don't remember seeing AR mags for cheaper then they are now...( adjusted for inflation.. )

My advice is buy lots of both as you can spare the change in your budget Buy 'em cheap and stack 'em deep |
| Another consideration is will you be rotating your mags? Some people feel that leaving mags loaded for extended periods of time can weaken the follower springs. Some like to rotate the mags to give the springs a break from continuous compression. If you ascribe to this philosophy, then you will need twice or 3 times the number of mags you need loaded at any one time. |

When I had 6 AR rifles, 57 mags. Now down to 3 complete (BUT MASSIVELY UPGRADED!) rifles. Still 57 mags...buying 20 more... and I want 180. Mags are all USGI (Center, OK, Adventureline, etc.) 12 stainless, 45 aluminum, all 30 rd. New 20 on order will be CProducts 30rd SS. Then next 20 aluminum. After that, plan is to get PMags if prices come down a "little" more (being that its one of the hottest mags right now, there's a premium). Somebody here said he can't remember a time when mags were ever cheaper. Me too. Buy'em now while they're dirt cheap. I remember pre-Y2K when some USGI Aluminum 30RD USED mags sold for $18 each! (Thanks to Kalifornia.) |
| 12 mags per rifle is minimum std while it is always nice to have more, 12 is min due the possibility if you have a follower or spring break or lip damage. Besides usually you would never want to carry more then 12 loaded at a time which can fulfill most any mission. |
| I like the idea of having at least ten per rifle, but I think up to twenty would be ideal. Since you have eight ARs, this would put you up to 160 magazines total. One thing to consider though is how often each AR is used. For me I only have two and they both see about equal usage. With eight though, I couldn't see more than three getting really gettng loads of use. With that being the case, I would make it so that there are twenty magazines per rifle for the three that see the most usage and then ten per every other rifle. This puts you down to about 110 or so magazines. |
|
I only have one AR right now and have about 20 mags for it. When I get my second I'll probably get another 20. then Iam going to buy about 20 more mags just to have incase some break or get worn out. I only use 6 of these mags for training/ range use, the others are loaded and ready to rock. I dont go out and shoot a million rounds through a mag in one day or use it for 3 gun matches every weekend, so Iam not that hard on mags. This number of mags works for me, but it may not work for you. I use my AR mostly for duty/ home defense (even though there are much better choices.)

I errr my friend has 4 AR's
20 20rd USGI 26 30rd USGI 12 30rd CP 24 30rd D&H 12 30rd Pmag and I want to more than double this soon probably with more Pmags and D&H mags magazines are disposable items be it through wear/damage/theft/lose and your rifle is a single shot without them. while their plentiful and cheap I would go with the old saying buy it cheap and stack it deep |
