i've seen a lot of pictures of magazines that are labeled.  i'd like to do this, but im not sure what i should label the mags with.  i want something thats easily visible on black pmags, and something that won't rub off after repeated use.

im also not sure what to write on them.  i was thinking my initials and a number, any body have a better idea?

I only put my initials on mags.  I also mark LULAs, ear muffs, mag pouches, and anything else that might end up in a buddy's range bag.  I use a paint pen that I got at a craft store.

I use colored tape and I write on the tape with Black sharpie.

A black marking pen works very well.

a silver sharpie sounds like it would show up nicely on black pmags.  im not sure how long sharpie ink would last on a gi mag though.  might have to do some testing with a paint pen and a sharpie.  i dont want something thats gonna rub off after a few months.  have y'all had any trouble with your markings coming off?

thanks for the input guys.

Paint marker maybe? The ones with the ball in them that you have to shake them. That might work.

I would use a piece of paper with a paper punch hole in it as a "mask" and spray paint red, for your "combat" ammo, blue for your "hunting" type ammo, and white for your cheap, unreliable, plinking ammo. All done on the lower back of the mag, and then spray some flat or satin "clear coat" or brush some fingernail polish on it for longer wear. Just remember, red is HOT, "Premium" self defense ammo. A round dot is all you need to look at. Simple.  Be sure it's sighted in for the "RED" ammo.

I wrap mine with electrical tape.  2 bands of tape for the good stuff (mil spec)  one band for crappy commercial ammo.  nothing for my "cheap as i can load em" handloads.  I then write the specfic ammo type on the tape in white grease pencil.

easy to change, and cheap and quick to id.

Been using that techinque for close to 20 years.  Every few years touch up is required.  I usually mark the base of the mag with the first inital of my last name and then number them 1-20.

This is what works for me but I also mark both sides of the mag and use my first two initials.

So lets say mag CH 31 double feeds three times over the course of a three day class, it gets trashed and another is bought to replace it.

Black sharpie for light colored mags, silver sharpie for black mags.  You may need to touch them up ocassionaly, but it's not a big problem as far as I'm concerned.

That's funny.
I would mark my work rubber boots / gloves "L" and "R" and nobody would touch them.?

But seriously folks,
Soldering iron to permanently etch, then follow up with an easier to ID method of choice

I tape off the mag leaving about 1" free at the bottom and paint Red for Range mags (I have six or eight that way).  I have eigtht painted orange for "Oh Shit" mags.  The rest of the collection of 200 mags are just put away and never used.  I have been using the same range mags for close to 10 yeras without a problem-collection of Adventureline, Simmonds, Universal, OK....

At the auto parts store, they have valve marking pens in all colors. They are oils resistant and have worked well for me.
