If I were you, I'd 1-just leave it alone, or 2-spray it with Krylon.

about anything you use is going to wear/scrape off and kinda look like crap.

I would recommend posting this as a WTT in the EE, to trade off with someone who has some of whatever color you really need.  In that way, you get EXACTLY what you want as does someone else.

I assume that this would also work (equally) well for painting a set of black plastic handguards, pistol grip and collapsible stock that will eventually be transmogrified from black into pink - as that is my oldest daughter's current color of choice for for rifle furniture ...

Yes, but buying a can of spray paint to use on parts that I already own is much cheaper than going out and buying a whole new set of furniture (to include handguards, grip and stock) ...

But thanks for that link - - the funny thing is that I didn't realize there was actually a dedicated refinishing forum ..... oops ...

I just know that if you are going to paint plastic the fuision paint is the way to go. I have not painted any gun parts but I have used it on plastic works great.

Thanks for the welcome. Since I'm retired maybe I can go into business refinishing or recoloring  plastic  AR15 furniture. What a concept. I think I'll head up to Wally World and buy there stock of Fusion paint.LOL

if you're doing any kind of grip work or forearm stuff check out the tool dip.  you can get it at any local hardware store i have used the actual dip but not the spray can. it works ok just as long as you prep the surface really well i.e. sanding and fou may look into a primer as well.  the nice thing about this is that it gives a rubber feel to the grip.  im not sure on the exact name of the product but it shows a hammer handle being dipped on the label, which i think is blue.  just go to the local hardware store and ask them, they should know what you are talking about.

Its called Plasti-dip I have used it before,They also make it in spray cans, which is easier to use if you dont want a thick coat.

Dura Coat works on all plastic and will not come off.

Does the Dura Coat process for coating plastics require that it be "baked-on" in some way ?

Cerakote works very well, too. It goes on extremely thin. NIC Industies has a gun coating widget on their website.
The Krylon Fusion is the cheapest but will def show scratches and wear.

I used Brownell's Alumihide II to paint a few.  After they cured they seemed to hold up pretty good.
