Alright I just got this mag at the local gun shop for $10 dollars. The guy that owns the shop told me he thought it was a 10 round mag, but when I got it home I found it to only hold 8.
Has anyone else ever seen one of these?

Have you taken it apart to look inside?

+1; just take it apart, check it to make sure no obstructions present and that the spring has no kinks or anything that would prevent it from fully compressing.

Is the lower third of this magazine plastic?  I have a Colt 8 rounder like this.  Overall the mag should be shorter than a 20 round.   I believe they came with complete guns sometime during the AW ban.

I saw these in the Brownells catalog last night, OEM Colt mag, suppose to hold 9 rounds.

Yep, the Colt 8 rounder was issued during the AWB period.  I got mine two eight rounder mags with a 1995 Colt Match Target rifle.  I've not touched them, but I was told they can be converted to only hold five rounds for hunting in certain states.

mine is a bit different and came from the factory with a 5 rounds block (april 2000); without the block it holds 9 rounds.

I was thinking, maybe if you stick a Magpul follower in there, since it is taller, you will probably be able to reduce the round count to make it hunting legal.  I will experiment with this tonight, time permitting.

That was my intention for the mag was to block it for a five rounder, thats all we are allowed up here in maine. Actually our hunting regulations book doesn't specify a max number of rounds for Coyote night hunting, But the guys in the green trucks say five.

The magazine I have is identical to yours and only holds 8 rounds.  I installed a Gen III Magpul and the magazine was still able to hold 6 rounds easily.  Also, the way the spring is coiled where it mates to the follower is different than springs on 30 rd magazines.  I had to bend it slightly to get it back into the original follower.  HTH
