| Is there such a magazine? |
|
Yes, they have been made by many companies over the years. Most are crap and won't run, but a few are OK. I have PMI mags to which I have added MagPul followers, and they run 100% (though I had to modify the latch slot). The gold standard are Sterling mags, but they are rare as hens teeth these days. I hear that the Bushmaster 40 rounders are OK, and DPMS offer a 45-round mag which is made by welding two 30-rounders together. Then there is a Beta mag if you need 100 rounds on tap |

Ok well my brothers friend gave me these mags but the longer one has NO markings whatsoever on it. Also, are thermold plastic mags any good? I got one of those and an OKAY 30 roun mag as well as a book! Ideas? http://i24.photobucket.com/albums/c48/austinbelair/mags.jpg |
Where might one find PMI or Federal Ordnance Mags ? The only 40 round mags I have been able to find have been Bushmaster and MGW |
They pop up in the EE once in a while |
WOW!! They even have them listed online for $24.99 with $4.95 Shipping. Has anyone thried the Colt Brand 40 ronud mag?? The ISMI 40 Round Spring at Brownells seems popular but I don't know if they are chrome. |
Bet you a nickel its not a "Colt". More like "for Colt and other AR-15s". And I bet it sucks just like 95% of the other 40rd mags. I have a PMI that works ok, I rarely use it though. |
WTF? Then how the hell you supposed to deal with a 32 to 40 round stage? If you spend the 3 to 5 seconds doing a mag change on such a stage, you'll get your ass kicked in the results. Sorry, but most of us really NEED a source for reliable 40 rounders. Everyone: what about a current source for PMI 40s? Also, what is the actual capacity of a PMI w/ a magpull & wolff magspring? |
About a month ago, I saw someone on this forum selling 3 NIW PMI 40 round AR mags for $65 each. That was a little too much IMO. I have a PMI w/ magpul follower and ISMI spring and can only get 38 (reloadable) in it. I don't think Wolff makes 40 round springs. |
Private sale. Federal Ordnance mags were made by PMI. Exactly the same mag but for stamping on the floorplate. Packaging looked very similar, but one said Federal Ordnance, the other said Precision Magazine Inc. They even bore the same part numbers. I don't know if PMI was just a supplier to Fed Ord, or was owned by Fed Ord. The 40 round mag in the photo looks like USA. Compare the feedlips to those on the USGI mag on the right. PMI/Fed Ord 40 rnd M16 mags had feedlips that looked exactly like those on the USGI 30's. Also, the corners of the mag body were boxed in like on USGI's. Federal Ordnance and PMI closed down about the time that the AWB went into effect. They just shut the doors and quit. I wonder what happened to their mag tooling? They made some of the best Mini-14 20's, 30's, and 40's around. In my opinion, even better than Ruger factory mags. The steel was stronger, thicker than other cheaper mags such as USA. They were better formed, better designed. They just worked well. |

I bought 3 of these: http://www.cdnninvestments.com/ar240pamanew.html They are cheap enough so that if some or all of them don't work I won't loose too much sleep. If they don't work I guess I'll try Bushmaster. *Edit* at 24.95 a piece I won't be taking a chance that the Bushmaster 40rd mags don't work either. |
I don't see them as being very impractical. I do agree that they are more suited for the range than anything else though. If the ones I bought from CDNN are less than 100% I'll consider keeping them around just for the range assuming they aren't absolute garbage. What kind of AR do you have? My AR is a Bushmaster and I've see some people saying that Bushmaster 40s didn't work in their gun, so I'm interested in what kind of AR you have. |
I've used it in both my complete Bushy, and the BM upper with a GTS lower. |
Thanks. That is definitely good to know. Being able to keep 200 rounds in only 5 mags appeals to me. |
