I always wrote these off as mall-ninja gear, but lately I've noticed in a lot of the photos of troops in Iraq, magazine doublers seem to be prevalent.  Are these USGI, or are they private purchase? If USGI, are they metal or plastic?  All the doublers I've seen at gunshows seem to be plastic, and I have my doubts as to whether these type would be reliable enough for government issue.  What are the troops using, and who sells them?

There is nothing all too mystical about what troops carry.  In fact, a lot of times troops elect to have non-issue gear.

On the double mag holder.  I ran with a FOBUS.  I had/have a problem with using double mag holders.  My fault is not with the gear, but with my application of the gear.

I'm so used to retrieving mags from my vest that after I empty my first mag I drop the whole thing out of the rifle because of muscle memory.  My hand will be on the magazine in my vest while simultaniously releasing the mag.  The second full mag drops to the ground, wasting a 30 round mag.

I did this twice when the SHTF, so I said fuck it.  I run with a single mag and I'm doing just fine.  Through training and muscle memory, I'm just as fast in my reloads from my vest.

Well, as a vet of the peace-time Army of the 80's, the idea of troops carrying privately purchased non-USGI gear is a little alien.  My how things have changed. It's good to know that when the SHTF actually occurs, the brass have become more open-minded. Heck, when I was in the Army, they wouldn't even let us keep a knife with more than a 3-inch blade outside the arms room; and I was doing border patrol with the 2nd ACR in Germany, for Pete's sake!  For all we knew back then, the Russkies could have started the shit at any time. I caught hell one time because during an IG inspection, they found a live smoke grenade on my track that I had forgotten about. Sheesh!

My interest in the double-mag holders is mainly in relation to my own needs for personal defence; those "bump-in-the-night" type situations.  Seems like 60 rounds ready-to-go is a good thing, especially when you need to grab something quick-like. I live in a rural area, and the house is well secured at night, so most potential bad situations would be out-of-doors.  Whether it be somebody messing with our vehicles, trying to steal stuff out of the machine shed, or just some drunk idiot who thought it would be funny to take a shit in my kids' school bus stop (That has happened!), I want to have a minimum of gear to fumble with in the dark.  I figure that any situation where I would conceiveably need MORE than 60 rounds would be best served by hunkering down and waiting for LE to arrive.
