Hey:

I got to digging through my magazines and found a bunch of stuff I haven't seen in about 20 years. I found 3 40 round mags that I bought at a gun show in about 1980. these mags always worked both full and semi-auto, but 40 rounders had such a bad reputation that I put them away. When I examined these 40 rounders I found that they were unmarked, steel with an AR 180 catch on the right side of the body. One was loaded with 40 rounds of 55 gr ammo. I took the loaded mag to the range and it functioned flawlessly. this mag had to be loaded at least 20 years ago. Is this a Sterling mag? I also found 10 Colt marked 20 round mags some loaded, again probably 20 years ago. Same thing ran great.

My question is if the 40 rounders are Sterling can I put Magpull followers in them? Brownells sells 40 round springs. Will Magpull followers fit in the strait 20 round mags or can they be modified to fit these mags? If so I'll buy rebuild kits for the 20's from Cproducts and 3 followers for the 40's.

Thanks,
Richard

No, Magpul followers won't fit in straight 20rd mags.  Maybe modified, but there shouldn't be any problems with original followers in the staright 20 rounders.

Some of the old 40 mags from different manufacturers have the 180 slit cuts on them but are not Sterling mags. The Sterling mag I have and the ones I have seen had a Sterling marked floorplate on them.
Brownells springs for 40 rounders are about as much as new 40 round mags. Wish someone would put out a cheaper one since its just a few more coils on it and nothing special.

Some more research and it looks like my 40's may be USA. Will magpull followers fit in these or should I just go with green? I did some reading on 20's and I'll leave these alone. I'll probably upgrade my Adventureline 30's with CProducts kits.

Thanks,
Richard

Magpul followers should fit just fine.  I have a 20rd USA mag with Magpul Gen 1's and it works great.  I know for the most part USA mags are complete junk but every once in a while you can get lucky.  My 20rd USA runs like a champ and has never had a failure.  I did change out the spring and follower to help but it runs great.  Having said that I would never use it for more than a range mag.  So if you 40rd USA works good use it but use it for range use only.
