My buddy just bought some black Thermold looking mags at a gunshow. They look identical to thermolds except for the last inch at the bottom. The base plate is much wider and different. The manufacturer must not be proud of them as there is no name externally anywhere. No marks no nothing. They refuse to lock the bolt back in his Rock River upper. In my bushy, the bolt drags tightly across them. Who made these mags, and do they need to be broken in. I thought I remember some area needing shaving or buffing. What's up? M4-AK

I had the same problem I found the mags feed 100% but the bolt did not lock back on empty. The solution I found was to re-shape the rear of the mag where the follower sits and stops the bolt on mine they were round and on a standard mag they are square. get a GI mag or similar and put it next to the fake thermold and you will see the difference at the top of the back edge. Nothing a Dremmel wont sort |
| I never had a good experience with any polymer mags. They seem to work at first but then little problems creep up like not locking the bolt to the rear or not engaging the mag-lock. I recently left mine at a local range after I was done trying to figure out what was going on. Some guys at the range took them and they also had the same problems. I use a Bushmaster XM4, the other guys were using RRA. I read in a magazine somewhere (cant remember which one - sorry) - that the solvents we use to clean the weapon can sometimes wear out the mags quicker. I dont know if they can prove that but to me it made sense. Anyone else had better experiences? |
