A Sgt. in my unit who just got back from Iraq told me he was issued a 45 round mag which was the same size as a 30 round mag.  He said it slightly heavier, and that it might have been a darker shade of gray.  You can imagine my skepticizm when i heard this but he said that he still has those mags and is shipping one to me when he gets around to it.  Any ideas?

It's physically impossible to fit 45 rounds into the same space as 30, so I don't know what he's talking about.

Yeah, that's the thing that bugs me.  He's totally the opposite of tools that would make up that kind of crap.  I guess I'll just have to wait and see.  It clearly doesn't add up...

Isn't Thermold or someone making mags that are the size of 30round mags with 30 rounds loaded, or can be extended to hold 45?  I think I recal seeing them for sale in the EE, but I've never really heard much about them.

I've got a video of me closing one, somewhere.  They have a expandable baseplate that detaches, and slides down about 4 inches.  The rumor I heard was it was for storing 30 rds loaded and not wearing out the spring, then when you were ready to go, slap the bottom up.

I thought Thermold didn't exist anymore.

There are Thermold mags that hold 45rds.  What it is is a 30rd mag that can be extended to hold 45rds.  It's the same size of a 30rd mag when fully compacted but when it is extended it is a little bit longer.

Delta Force has them in their catalog

Look under high capacity rifle mags (I can't link directly to it)
ETA: Thermold 30/45rd mag

Wow, they're a bit pricey!
