I hope this isn't a completely dumb question but here goes. I shot a bunch this winter at the cabin. Target was a simple board or pallet with a large pile of snow behind it and dirt wall behind that. When the snow melted we found a bunch of bullets that didn't mushroom at all. In fact the only thing that mushroomed were 22lr. 9mm, 308, 7.62, and 223 all held their shape. Do the rounds go through the wood such velocity that the bullet doesn't deform before the snow slows it down? I'll get a pic posted if I can

Looks like the rifle bullets are all FMJ, which don't mushroom.  They flatten, but your "backstop" probably didn't make them decelerate fast enough to deform much.

Not sure what's going on with your 9mm, what brand are those.

I think the 9mm was this

This is fairly typical.  Snow makes the perfect bullet trap, and come spring you can literally pick them up and reload them (I've done it).  The relatively thin wood isn't going to deform them much, unless it's a fast expanding varmint bullet or such.
