I think that's the best small arms cartridge ever made right there.

Never even heard of this round. Any back story or origin?

Was proposed for the Squad Automatic Weapon in the 1970's.  NATO standardized the SS109 5.56mm bullet, and we adopted FN's MINIMI as the SAW in 5.56x45mm.  The very nice 6mm SAW round promptly died.

I can only imagine the performance. That bullet is long!

It was a near perfect metallic cartridge. Great penetration, Ap performance, flat shooting, low recoil ect. I've often fantasized about someone bringing this round back from the dead in concert with a new AR type rifle.

It was a tad slow but made up for it with excellent BC.

Not much of a reason with the .260 around.

It would be a good platform for DPMS genII or LWRC Six8 type gun with a mid size receiver and new magazine. 260 is full powered and eats barrels, 6mm saw was more of an intermediate cartridge only slightly heavier than 762x39mm so a lot could be carried. It was good enough that the soviets copied it basically in the 6mm unified round. The chinese 5.8 is also similar in performance with its new heavy loadings. The 5.8 is probably the best round issued in any quantity today for an assault rifle.
