| I shoot at an indoor range locally and used to blast m855 all the time. Now they check all ammo no more steel. I see many are doing this now. Did this stuff chew through their back stops or are they just being cautious or did some traps fail? |

Apparently the steel inserts or cores chew up their bullet traps. There have even been a few indoor ranges catch fire from either 855 or Russian steel core sparking something off in the trap.
Last one I recall was in the D/FW area a couple of years ago. Burned to the ground. I don't get it at outdoor ranges though. I avoid any with such restrictions. |

Burned to the ground. You're right. It was DFW indoor range or DFW shooting range I can't remember. It was right down the street from my work. We watched the black smoke billowing up. I'm not certain but I was told this was because someone shot a tracer in there. Again, this is not confirmed info. Back to the point, I asked at an outdoor range who restricts steel why and they said it tears up their backstops. I said m193 does about the same though doesn't it. The guy said, "OK" and I can't forget it because it so confused me. My range buddy and I think the fact that these guys make fair money reselling brass adds to the ban on steel. A customer is more likely to understand the destruction of the backstop. A paying customer is less likely to appreciate being told no steel because we don't want to sort out the cases before we sell your brass. There is a reason some ranges have signs telling you not to pick up cases. Let it be known I have no evidence to support this, it's just a theory. |

Don't forget the Mild steel tip is also more prone to ricochet and "spark".... the lead will splatter.
With all the residual unburnt powder dust around.... Nosler had this had at one of their indoor ranges a few years ago... a stray spark ignited the very little unburnt powder on the floor. My Local range had it happen at the outdoor 25yd range. I have had bullet fragment ricochet of steel plates and nick my ankle. And given insuring issues.... I imagine in order to find good coverage , requires you follow certain "trends". |
