I took my iron-sights-only Sig M400 out with some friends this weekend. We just shot from the bench with sandbags. They really wanted to try 200 and 300 yard shots on our 12" paper targets and based on past experience I figured it would be a waste of time. Previously, I had a bunch of Ultramax .223 Remington remanufactured 55-grain soft points. I could do okay at 100 yards, but at 200 I only managed 4 hits out of 30 shots.
I ran out of Ultramax and we dipped into my collection of Federal XM193. Wow what a difference ammo can make! No problem hitting the 200-yard targets, and we even managed to hit the 300 yard target despite none of us really being able to see that one! I'm sure this is obvious to most of you, but yes ammo makes a difference. Ultramax is apparently about as consistent as a rubber band gun. |

Consider yourself lucky that your gun hasn't exploded. Ultramax has been related to the vast majority of kabooms reported on this forum. You couldn't pay me to give me ultramax ammo. If I were you, I'd throw out the rest. |

While I haven't seen any of the ammo I am about to mention fired from a Sig... I suspect it will do pretty darn good from your rifle as well...
Fed. Tipped Varmint 50gr. GECO 55gr FMJ Both of those offer outstanding "Bang for the Buck Accuracy" in my AR's as well as numerous other peoples..... BUT I do not suggest either for SD.... just range ammo. GECO 55gr 15rds, 100yds, 20" SS, CHF, FF, "Cheap" PSA Upper, Scoped....I truly believe if I had not "pulled" those 3 left shots... they all would have been in the main group. Both of my ammo suggestions give much smaller groups then XM type ammo in numerous AR's...I have seen similar accuracy results from the GECO in at least a dozen different AR rifles by now.
