As I'm kinda new to the AR scene so I'm not very knowledgeable about all the ammo out there. I bought some rounds for practice and wanted to get some opinions on these. I have a local ammo supply shop that has these on sale. I thought about buying a bunch of them if they are good while everyone else is emptying their wallets on the XM855. I haven't been able to get to the range to test them because all this snow and ice. I can get the the 5.56 - 20 ct for $6.79 and the 223 - 100rd box is $34. Thanks.

Of those two, I'd take the 5.56. That's not a bad price.

Any brass M193 is basically going to be $300 a case minimum. Federal is a good name brand and you don't have to pay shipping, so buy away.

Both are good to go.

If your rifle is chambered for 5.56 I would always buy 5.56 unless there is a huge difference in price.  .223 ammo works for either the .223 chamber or the 5.56 chamber.

You mentioned the 62 gr XM855 vs the 55 gr XM193.  I personally prefer the XM193 as the best all purpose round.  XM855 is decent round also and is usually available for a good price.  It is the current round used by the military until the conversion to the M855A1 is completed.  I am not sure there has ever been a question that the M193 was the better round, except that NATO would not accept it as the official round because the wounds it caused were considered inhuman.

For plinkin, it doesn't matter if it is .223 or 5.56. I keep a 1500+ rounds of 5.56 for HD and such. I have several thousand of AE223 and Wolf Gold for everything else. .223 is usually cheaper. I almost solely buy .223 for match loads. I find good .223 match to be more accurate than 5.56, generally speaking. There are good 5.56 match loads, but not as many as .223.
