Sorry if this topic has came up already but can't find anything on here or google.  Why would someone choose a 5.56 round over .223 and vice versa.   I know that the 5.56 is higher pressure but just want to know why some of you choose one over the other.

All of my uppers are 5.56 1/7. For some reason that's just the way it's worked out over the years and I'm glad that it did.

I can shoot 5.56 or .223 consistently without having to worry about overpressure issues.

If I were to buy another barrel, upper, or complete rifle I would choose a 5.56 over a .223.

Well I understand that part.  Just wondering about the actual ammo choice.

The only .223 I have is .55gr Federal TRU. The rest is all M855/M193.

My rifles are more consistent with the heavier M855 and standard M193, and I only keep a couple of mags loaded with the TRU for HD.

I'm fairly accurate out to 300 - 400m with the ACOG and the milspec ammo, and if I have to reach out further than that I switch to my .308 bolt gun.

For me it boils down to what you intend to do with said ammo. Plinking? I'm using 5.56 all day long because I bought a lot of it years a go when it was cheap.

If I'm going for varmints, I'm using a .223 varmint load that is more accurate out of my rifle than a 5.56.

Need to know more information about your intended purpose to help answer your original question.

This comes from the "ammo oracle" . It can be found by clicking on "tools" located just to the right of your username. It is packed with GREAT info, most definetly worth a look,

Also check out the FAQ's in the ammunition section of AR-15, another wealth of info.

Edit to add link ( sorry, don't know how to make them "hot")

I just buy the ammo I want/need, and don't worry for a second about whether it's .223 or 5.56. I have 5.56 or Wylde chambers, so it doesn't matter.

Thanks for the info guys.  I will definitely check out those ammo links.  I'll be using my rifle for mostly plinking and home defense.

I have either  NATO or Wylde chambers, so I don't worry about it.

Bulk: I buy good bulk regardless if it is 5.56 or .223.
Match: I like good .223. There seem to more quality match ammo in .223.
Hunting: I also prefer .223 for the same reason as match. Just better choices.
HD: It doesn't matter too much, but I tend to like the 5.56 loads: MK262, MK318, Hornady T2 TAP 77gr.

I reload .223 only. I don't want to mess with crimping bullet too much and I will not crimp primers.
