So I was firing some American Eagle today and one of the cartridges shot out the primer and coated my BCG and everything in more gunpowder residue than shooting 100 rounds would do. On top of that the primer fell down in my trigger assembly and locked it all up requiring me to field strip and pull the primer out with my trusty leatherman.
I'm all for cheap ammo but Federal American Eagle has lost my vote! |

Quoted:
Federal FC brass used in AE223 has loose primer pockets. When I started reloading, this brass gave me all sorts of trouble with primers falling out. Ended up loading with mild plinking loads just once, then scrapping. When was this?
AE's brass hasn't been junk since the 90s. I've loaded 10s of thousands of the current cases and they're no worse than anything else. Sounds like the OP just had a bad round. I've had this happen twice with UMC over the years. Usually AE is a pretty good practice round though.

Believe it or not, in my rifles, I prefer to shoot Berdan primers as oppose to the Boxer primers.
Berdan primers are mostly crimped so there is no way it will come out. I get my hands on anything Berdan as long as its not Russian. As long as its not steel (Brass is my choice), I'll buy Berdan primers over boxer any day. Boxer primers have the bad rep. of coming out, not burn cleaner, and so on, Berdan primer was actually a USA invented versus Boxer primers. I don't know why we picked Boxer. Guess to keep reloading community happy. |

I really think you are confused about boxer/berdan, boxers and buring "dirtier" come on now, |

The FC brass I had issues with was fired by me last fall, bought from LGS
in August/September 2012, 500 rd cases of AE223 in 100 rd boxes. I was losing primers at 24.5grs H335 behind 55gr fmj. Loaded a bunch at 24grs H335, no problems. Got some advice here and experienced reloaders at the range about FC AE223 having loose primer pockets. Now I'll load FC brass with larger diameter primers like Rem 71/2 or CCI 450, fire once, and scrap. I prefer LC 1X and load it all day long with 25grs H335 or 24.1 grs IMR 3031 with any primer (usually CCI #41) and 55gr pill. No primer problems what so ever. |
