I read the boxes for 55gr. stuff at Walmart - Winchester, Federal, a couple of others. All were described as suitable for plinking and target practice, but none said for self defense. Do they not serve the purpose for that, also? What does the Military use now - 55 or 62 gr.?  TIA!

They use 62Gr M855. Personally I would get 55gr Fmj, did your walmart have some in stock? Also what is your twist rate?

5.56 55/62 grain would be a better FMJ for self defense, but make sure your ammo works first.

Military doesn't use hollow points. It is against NATO or Geneva Convention - can't remember which one.

I would NEVER use FMJ for self defense. Way too much penetration and you risk shooting innocent people which you would be held liable for.

I would highly recommend Winchester PDX1. Check out youtube.com for videos.

It has a massive energy dump which will inflict a ton of damage but doesn't over-penetrate.

The GI 55 grain bullets supposedly tumble and break up after impact and create a more devastating wound.  The 62 grain ammo was for penetrating Warsaw Pact body armor/vests and has a steel penetrator in it that also keeps the bullet from breaking up like the 55 grain bullets do.

I figure part of the reason for carrying small bullets is to be able to shoot the same target more than once.

Up close (real self defense range) a .223 bullet, even a 55 grain fmj bullet, makes a pretty nasty hole in someone.  It might not be much for cars, walls, etc. but it does a number of flesh/organs.

I don't need to shoot 300 to 500 yds. with my AR15 since that is quite a bit beyond "self defense" range.  Around here its quite a bit beyond what you can see, or shoot.

I think you meant the Hague Convention.

havent bothered to look at it in a while i think about 2500 fps is what it takes to get the cannelure on 5.56 fmj to yaw and fragment in the body.  this is easily achievable in a 16" carbine at close quarters.  Quality 5.56 xm193 do this inside the body and makes an excellent defense round.  No need to spend $1.50 a round on some winchester PDX1, although you can if you like.  Lake city 5.56 will get the job done.

Yes, they had some. Also, a nearby Walmart said on the computer they had LE 6940's in limited quantity. When I called, they said sold out yesterday for $995 and they were Bushmasters. They don's even have Bushmasters on their web pages. Maybe he didn't know the difference. Seems like lots of people call all AR's Bushmaster after Sandy Hook. I have a Personal Defense Weapon now (PDW) since my government ordered thousands of them. What's good for them is OK with me. No more Assault Rifles!

My twist is 1 in 7.

I have a Bushmaster Dissipator made during the ban. Made before they were bought out and moved. A-2 stock, fixed handle, no flash hider. Am I missing anything without the M-4 feed ramp? I've thought of selling it and getting a 6940 for just those features and so my wife can handle it better.

Back to ammo - what about Georgia Arms 55 gr.reloads? Real good, fair, or poor?

If you need up shooting someone, even in self defense, the lawyers are gonna use everything they can to make you look bad.

It is good to use self defense ammo because it shows you are serious about self defense and don't want to harm innocent people.

You also need to be able to explain that when you get hounded by police, lawyers, etc.

Lake City 5.56 FMJ with a cannelure is FMJ and I am not sure about the rest of your logic.  No offense I am not meaning to be a jackwagon but for the most part we don't have that issue in Texas.  I guess  it can be that way in other states though, who knows with CO these days.  You shoot somebody in Texas under castle doctrine and they tell you to pass go and collect $200, they don't care what ammo your shooting with.  Just make sure you know the castle doctrine, what you can and can't do.

M193 fragmentation is an engineering accident, not deliberately designed. Whether or not a particular 55gr FMJ bullet will fragment depends on more than just velocity; the jacket has to be thin enough and the cannelure deep enough. Wolf 55gr (for example) won't fragment regardless of velocity due to the bimetal construction of the bullet.
Personally, I have no problems using quality 5.56 M193 for defense but YMMV.

I have bought alot of ammo from Georgia Arms, they have never let me down and happy with them. Though at times they can be pricey on some ammo. Just have to shop around.
