Has anyone tried the CCI 22 lr for the AR? I've seen them advertised but what's different about them that any high velocity ammo would do?

there are at least 3 versions of cci 22lr..   Stinger, Mini-mag, and another one..  They are MUCH hotter than any other .22 I have found..  They can be (what seems) like 2x louder - which i consider it hotter..

I was very disappointed with the accuracy of the Stingers (they are in 50 rd boxes and higher price)- the mini-mags gave me the best accuracy overall. BUT .22 accuracy is iffy at best at times, i always seem to get flyers in a group

There are many different types of CCI 22lr.

The one the OP is talking about is the CCI "Tactical" 22lr.

I have gone through the first box, and have had very good luck with this type so far.

100% ignition for the first full box (and into the second). I'm not where I can get to it but I think a box was 375 rounds.

This ammo has some sort of light lubricant and is plated. It seems to be clean in my daughters AR22.

Her bbl is a custom Douglas which has been adapted to a CMMG bolt system. The residue in the bolt catch area is lower compared to other bulk ammo, REM, Win, etc.
This bbl has been Melonited and cleans up in three patches from a long session with this new CCI ammo. We feel like it is at least as good as CCI Std Vel so far.

Unfortunately, we have attempted to find a calm wind day for serious ammo performance testing and have had no luck in months. When we get an honest calm day we will bench with a scope and report back.
She has managed her first clean scores on the 50 yard targets while using this ammo, but that doesn't answer if it is better than CCI Std Vel, Eley, Wolf etc. I promise to share those results when we can do them justice.

Mine came from AmmoToGo and wasn't expensive, so no worries. Buying a box to try isn't a big deal and I know of no bulk discounts yet.

there is a long post in the rimfire forum

I was going to buy a bunch but the "new designed" bullet along with many of the bad reviews in 22lr conversions convinced me to not buy any and continue with the CCI MMs.

MMs work for me so I would not get the new stuff

FWIW the CCI Tactical AR 22 is the only ammo that runs 100% through my Advantage Arms 22 conversion so far.

I am on the lookout for a bulk deal on this stuff. Let me know if you find any.
