I took some M855 green tips to the range today withe the following results:
100 yd; -4 min elev, 0.5 min wind - 0.625" 6 shot group 300 yd zero; 2.5 inch groups 400 yd; 4 min elev, 1.5 min wind - 6 inch groups, 10 of 10 pierced 0.25" mild steel plate 500 yd; 6 min elev, 1.5 min wind - 10 inch groups, 6 of 10 pierced 0.25" mild steel plate 16" non-chrome lined barrel, 9-12mph wind from 3 o'clock. This rifle will produce sub MOA groups at 500yds with handloads, and 6" groups at 500 with bargain bin PMC FMJ My conclusion: Great penetration at distance, better than expected. Accuracy was slightly disappointing; next step is to pull and reload a few, and see what we can wring out, my hypothesis is that the projectile is poorly balanced and will not improve much. Sorry, chrony died... I am ashamed. I recovered one of the steel cores: only slight damage, weight was 10.02gr. |
| Only slightly. This was done under near ideal conditions: 78 degrees, 30% humidity, only light wind, firing from a comfortable position on a solid rest. They seemed to retain plenty of velocity at 500, I would have liked to seen the groups stay a bit tighter. All in all we were satisfied with the results, and very impressed with the penetration at distance. I find that I have to complain about something. |
