I shoot the M855 in my FS2000, and wanted to know if there is ammo out there that is the same in .308?

There is a small list of the NATO stds and designations in the link.
Also, you can check the sticky notes in the forum.

Are you asking, "are they any 7.62x51 rounds made that have a mild steel front core, like the 5.56x45 M-855 round?"

That is a typical 'cup and core' bullet. No mild steel front core. The M-80 round would be comparable to M-193.

If I remember correctly, .7.62x51mm Ball can penetrate body armor already so adding a steel core would be pointless.

That should tell you about .30 cal, it by nature is a very effective round. 5.56 had to be modified many times to be serve different roles.

So would the M61 be the closest thing I can get as a civilian?

How about the M993, they are armor-piercing so I dont think I can own them.

Yes to get the same high penetration that the M855 has in a .308 to make it a super penetrater.

The only 'penetrating' 7.62x51 rounds are the old, no longer made, M61 AP, and the new M993, which has Tungsten, not Steel, so you will not see these on the surplus market.

Can always pick up M2 pulled AP projectiles on the open market, and load them up yourself for 7.62x51 use.  Not legal for ammo makers to make and sell to non-mil/non-leo, but perfectly legal to roll your own for personal use.

M59 was the closest 7.62 x 51 mm analogue to M855.
