Hey guys,
I am building a self defense loadout, it will include my rifle, 5 30 round mags, and 1 20 round mag. The gun will be a 10.5" LMT. In the 20 rounder, and 2 of the 30 rounders I have Hornady 5.56 75gr TAP, this is the LEO stuff, no the civilian .223.

Now originally I was going to load the other 3 mags with M855, so that if the need arised I would have the ability to punch through mild surfaces, which I don't think the TAP would do. I know this may sound like a crack pot idea, but it's how I want this set up. Now I was going to get M855, however I came across and article about the MK318, which is said to be overall more reliable, especially in shorter rifles. So I was thinking about buying that for my other 3 mags, however I just found a cheap source for more 75gr 5.56 TAP.

So my question is, will TAP punch through harder surfaces? I know the MK318 is suppose to be a penetrator round, and the TAP really isn't. So my purposes I think the MK318 is better, but the TAP is at a good price, and from what I believe better ammo.

Got it

ETA: Picked up 100 rounds of MK318, from what I've read this will outperform any other round for barrier penetration. Very excited to get it.

Mk318 will go through barriers. There are also other barrier-blind loadings you can try such as:

-5.56 mm Federal 62 gr Trophy
Bonded Bear Claw (TBBC) bonded JSP (XM556FBIT3) and

-5.56 mm Winchester
64 gr solid base bonded JSP (Q3313/RA556B) developed for the FBI

-Black Hills 5.56 mm 50 gr TSX loading

Despite popular belief, ball/FMJ ammo, specifically M193 and M855 are NOT excellent penetration rounds through commonly found barriers. In fact, both perform very poorly through standard car windshield glass. I shoot a ton of the stuff for plinking/fun ammo but it is not what my first choice would be for self-defense or SHTF ammo. Would I use it if I had nothing else? Definitely, but it wouldn't be my #1 first choice.

It will do well, but it will not outperform other similar loads. It will do similarly. That said, it is a good choice.

Your 75gr TAP will still be a good choice for long distance or shots that need to be taken with no barriers.

Black Hills also loads a .223 62gr Barnes X.  It's pretty nasty, and a decent all around performer...

I would seriously look at the Black Hills 5.56 loaded 50gr TSX.
