I have just bought a AR15 5.56 and I bought some 223 at a gun show at the same time and one of the vendors told me I could shoot 223 with my AR is this true.

Yes. .223 ammo can be safely fired in a 5.56mm chamber.

yes but if you have a 223 you should NOT shoot 5.56 ammo. 223 is generally meant for better accuracy and 5.56 is hotter hitting load. you can find detailed info on this in the ammo FAQ.
