Its 62gr Hornady TAP FPD with the red plastic tip my question is what is the red tip for and how does it work?

I think hornady's website has a diagram under v max. It basically is a piece of plastic that goes into the lead core. When the plastic tip is hit first it pushes on the lead core causing rapid expansion

Though its not listed on the recommended defense ammo would this round be sufficient for personal defense?  Ive had these for a while until a few months ago i bought some 69gr blackhills  Sierra matchking HP I keep my primary mag loaded with these but how would the Tap rounds stack up for defense?

The TAP loads with the VMAX bullet tend to underpenetrate.

I wouldn't recommend using them or stocking up on them as defensive ammo.
