What is more deadly in 5.56? High velocity (55gr) or heavier weight (77gr)?? Im going to be shooting out of a 16" bbl. Im not limited to FMJ either, so bullet construction is irrevelant.

Then you have to elaborate on "deadly."

When people talk "deadly" around here, they're generally talking about self-defense rounds.  People are not "asses", and the places I suggested he check would probably answer his questions.  You ask a vague question, you get vague responses.

For hunting, weight always trumps velocity on medium to big game because you have to get to the vitals.  Penetration is a weight factor not velocity.  That said, for hunting, shoot the heaviest bullet your gun will stabilize.  What is your twist?  The Barne's TSX is king of the hill for hunting.  It reliably expands to realistic hunting distances, 2x expansion.  Retains all it weight for good penetraion and is deadly accurate.  It is however the most expensive bullet, BUT it is well worth it in my opinion.  1:12 shoot 55gr, 1:9 shoot 62gr, 1:7-8 shoot 70gr.

The 55gr and the 62gr TSX bullets are definitely good game bullets, even in the .224 caliber weapons...

Do not forget to look at bonded bullets as well.

Weight vs Velocity is always a compromise.  You also need to factor in the twist rate of your barrel.  Heavy bullets tend to be better for hunting, but only if they are still carrying enough velocity to expand properly.  Bullet manufacturers design their bullets to expand at a certain velocity, most will list a minimum velocity for reliable expansion.  If they slow down too much they may punch right through the animal without expanding.

Take into consideration your max range and what velocity your rifle will be at before selecting your projectile.

Bullet construction is relevant. No single bullet type is the best at everything.
Deadliest is a concept that varies from person to person; we each have our perceptions about what our needs are. IMO heavier is better in general. For now I favor 75gr OTM loads over M193 or M855. The 77gr loads may be marginally better, but factory 77gr loads are expensive and the selection is limited.
75gr OTMs are not the ideal bullet for hunting, but they are effective against hogs or deer. I have some 62gr TSX bullets I will get worked up to a hunting load one of these days.

Ok.

CapitolP. I have been reading your posts on the TSX bullet with a lot of interest. A question. If you please.

Comparing apples to apples. How much of a difference would there be between a 6.8mm 85gr TSX and a 5.56mm TSX 70gr on a hog?

And yes for all you guys that are smart butts. I know 15gr's difference.

Is the 6.8mm that much more able to hit deep?

I have always leaned toward the heavier bullets in any caliber.

The heaviest you can shoot while still having the vel. need to perform

in 5.56 get the heavy bullets, ie 75gr area but in 5.56
