I spoke to someone today who claims to have an ammo can full off plastic .308. He described it as an all plastic cartridge with onlhy the primer being made of metal. You can see the powder inside the case if you hold it up to light. The "projectile" is has a grove around it where it should break off from the case.

Has anyone seen these before and know what they were used for?

He's probably talking about this.
Plastic Ammo
It's supposed to be accurate out to 100 yds and potentially lethal at close range.

This stuff is meant for german .308 rifles and as pricatice ammo. I forget which gun, but they have a adaptor for it which allows it to cycle using this ammo.

Its relatively cheap for .308 at $.10/rd

That must be it, thanks!

Note that because of the bullet profile, these won't allow bolt to close on some rifles.
Heard of problems with M1 .308 conversion & M1A. Bullet needs a throated barrel to keep from hitting lands.

They have a training bolt for G3 or HK51. I've got one for my vector, kind of fun dumping mags at $2 a mag.

You can see the powder better in the white one.

Anyone have a source for the G3/HK91 bolts to use with this ammo?

Well, it doesn't stay that fast for long - they are too light to retain any energy.  My buddy was shooting a bunch of this stuff with his G3 the other day, trying to make holes at 100 yards. Targets were still clean after 30 rounds and we found a bunch of those blue plastic bullets lying on the ground about 25 yards short of the target stands.  The tips of the bullets looked blown apart as well.

They do make a hell of a muzzle flash though, and sound like full power rounds.  Recoil is pretty much nonexistent (he was using the training bolt that was made for shooting these).

My target board is at 130 yards and those rounds punch thru every time, maybe the cold weather slows them down.

I think you guys were kitting high and they were bouncinmg, thats why you found them 25 yards away.

Plastic bounces, plus their are going 4300fps, so the dont have anywhere near the same poi of normal .308
