has anyone use the Monarch Soft Point in their 223?  That seems to be the only round that Academy has left on their shelves and I was going to pick up a bunch of it but decided to come here and check with you guys first.

Any corrosive problems?

Any primer problems?

Any hot round problems?

Im not looking to shoot through engine blocks and walls, just through varmints (both the four legged kind (bobcats, yotes, and pigs) and the two legged kind that decides my property would look better in their house.

Thanks.

Is there anyone that has used this ammo that may have a opinion on it?

Thanks.

I have shot 60-/+ rds of this out of my S&W M&P15 and I didn't encounter any of the problems you mentioned or others.  I had them for 1 week before they were fired.

Runs fine, esp with good feed ramps.

I've found a few lots of Russ SP that were so darn soft the tips deformed upon chambering, stubbing their tips on the chamber mouth like a bad HP.

Not as reliable as their fmj but great value.

Same as old blue box Barnaul. Wish I could still get it local...

Sorry I only have the FMJ. Which side of Houston are you on? I know the Academy on SWF and Fondren had all types not too long ago. Also the one on Westheimer and HY6 use to carry a lot of ammo. Ken

It was the corrosion issues I was the most concerned with.

My Bushmaster's extractor ripped the rim off a couple of them, leaving me some quality time with a cleaning rod and WD40 trying to get the cases out of the chamber. That only happened after shooting steel cased ammo, though.

The 55 gr ППУ sp seems to come apart pretty quickly: it may not be the best choice for two legged varmints.

It was in the above post but it got cut off somehow. No Barunal manufactured ammo is corrosive. The only ammo that will be is the Yugo surplus at Samco or some old chinese. Wolf, Barnual (Makes Monarch and the Bear brands- brown, silver and Golden) and Golden Tiger are not corrosive. Have you tried the Academy stores on SWF and Fondren or Hiway 6 and Westheimer? Those were my go to places and always had stock. I have not had any problems shooting any of this ammo. Ken  ETA- The blue box 223 is made by Barnual. The green box is Privi Partisan (also not corrosive). Ken

I've been shooting the light blue boxed, steel cased FMJ w/o a hitch. First bought 250 rounds and it eneded up being great range ammo. So I went back and got 1000 rounds. After tax it was around $265.00. One of the big Russian manufacturers makes it specifically for Academy (Wolf, Bear or Barnal). I also got some of the green boxed (brass cased) stuff to store. I think it was a little over $8.00 a box of 20 rounds.

I believe the gentleman is talking about the Monarch Brass cased Soft Point in the black boxes sold by Academy. This is Rebadged Privi Partisan ammo packaged under the "monarch" label for academy. I have fired about 150 rounds through an LMT M4, and it works fine, just as well as any other quality brass cased ammo, and certainly as well as the other flavors of privi Partisan ammo. FWIW, in my highly unscientific testing on the highly nefarious Wild Texas Hog, it seems to kill them dead just fine. I would have no reservations putting 2 rounds of this ammo into the center mass of an intruder in my home. HTH
