Okay so I picked up some new XM556NT1 50gr. Federal Frangible..

After poking through the ammo FAQ's and finding little substance to arguments and rumors of frangible as a self defense round, I implore the wisdom of the arfcom ammo elite.  I am a M855 man myself, but this stuff seems useful as a possible defense round to apartment and city dwellers...

What say you, oh gods of ammo?

My personal opinion: In an apartment, or in a home, the firing distances are so short that there is virtually no muzzle velocity lost. Anything that hits the BG is going to tear him up inside. Frangible ammo would seem to be the way to go in this instance.

However, I just loaded my "home" mags with 50 grain lead-tipped ammo.

I keep my current home mags with federal 50 gr. bonded soft tip LE ammo, as well as some m855 and m193 and mixture...  I jsut happened to stumble into this stuff and not sure where to relegate it.  Are there any available tests as to drywall/box of truth testing for frang?

Frangible ammo is designed to pulverize on impact on HARD targets such as steel thus reducing ricochets in shoot houses. Human flesh is nowhere near the hardness needed to make these bullets break up. They'll behave just like a non-fragmenting FMJ.

Do you have a source for this ammo?

Trying to find some for indoor range use.

As Zhukov said frangible is designed to turn to dust on hard targets, such as steel. It will act as a regular bullet in flesh or sheetrock. If you need some check out Ammoman.com

That's exactly what it's for.

I use it on occasion to defend my rural home from outside threats such as ground hogs, 'possums, 'coons, foxes, and the like.  It is effecitve in this role.  I would not recommend it, however, to "apartment and city dwellers" as a defense round.
