Cleaning out the basement today and going through some old stuff of mine I found a large round of what I believe is 50 Cal. The head is stamped M 43 and the bullet has a Black tip. Can anyone tell me exactly what I found? |
+1 99% of the time it is the year manufactured that every one sees on the head stamp, letter or letters designate that factory it was made at. FYI, Red=Tracer Silver=Incendiary No color=Ball Yellow=HE or Phospuros(sp?) White=Illum or Phospuros Purple= High pressure test Blue=Practice or Inert Dummy="Fluted Brass" |

Your .50 cal. AP round was made by the Milwaukee Ordnance Plant in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1943. This plant was government owned but operated by the U.S. Rubber Co. The plant was located in the old Eline Company candy manufacturing building and was set up to manufacture .50 cal. Ball, AP and Incendiary cartridges. Production began in August of 1942 and ended in December of 1943. During this time, 235.7 million rounds of .50 cal. were produced. As a collector cartridge, yours is not rare. These turn up from time-to time and are worth only a few dollars. The fact that this cartridge is a family heirloom, makes it priceless. D.D. |
