I sighted in my new Savage 9317 HMR and had 4 of 6 casings split. They were the Hornady 17gr. Varmint Express V-Max bullets. Has anyone else had this type of problem?  Just a bad batch of bullets?

Have the same gun (bougt a couple weeks ago), been shooting the same ammo (newly purchased), no problems. Tack driver.

Remington 17gr vmax seems to group better than the Hornady, but I've had a couple "duds" with the Remington, or at least I will have to shoot the casing twice for it to fire.

Having worked in more than my share of gun stores throughout the years...

I am willing to bet you are firing .17 HMR cartridges in a .22 WMR chamber.

Check it out and get back to us.

Clean the crud out of your bolt.  It's retarding firing pin velocity.  Remington's are loaded by CCI.  They aren't that hard.

There have been some problems with some rifles haveing slightly oversized chambers. If it was a 22 wmr chamber, then all of them would be split.

There are several threads on the following site concerning your problem, seems
to be a common problem with the HMR cartridge.

Hope this helps

Thanks for the information fellas.  I certainly do appreciate it.  BTW the barrel definitely says 17HMR.

Just because it says 17HMR doesn't mean it was reamed properly.  I bought a Marlin in 17M2.  I fired one round through it to see how loud it was going to be, and immediately upon ejecting the case, I knew something wasn't right.  The entire case was bulged and the neck was gone.  It looked like a helium bottle without the top part.  You could tell the bore was 17 caliber, but the chamber was obviously out of spec.

I have the Ruger 77/17 with a heavy stainless barrel and laminate stock. Never had a single problem with that rifle. I shoot all different HMR's all are tack drivers but I find that the Hornaday works best in my gun.

+1 I have the same gun. Great little gun no issues with any brand of ammo

Here's a pic of the case in question.  Just by looking at the case you can tell the brass had 'room to run'.  Even if the cases are prone to splitting, the outward deformation would not have occured to such a degree if the chamber was cut to SAAMI specs and headspaced correctly.
