I am trying to make up some loads using a sierra 55 gr ballistic tip match king with imr4064 powder.I am just trying to use up the stuff I have for some plinking loads. the book recomends 24.5 to 26 grains of powder for that load. it does not say it is a compressed load. but with 24.5 grains it is compressed. the individual grains of powder are good size pellets. is this why it is filling the case up? is it safe to go with a lower amount of powder like 23 grains or so. has anybody had expierence with this load? I will be shooting them out of an ar I am building . I know that 55 grains is pretty light for the 1-9 twist but I have a bunch of the stuff to use and I think the bullet weight is on the low end of what I can shoot out of it.

My book says you can start out at 23.6 grains.

But I have to say, .223 pressures using 4064 are a lot higher for a given velocity than with other powders like H4985.

I lost my danged Lyman book.  When I find it all be back.

I checked two manuals

Lee Manual - starting load 23.5

Speer #13 starting load 24.5

Have you tried using a drop tube?

I mounted the Foster six inch drop tube under my powder measure for situations like yours.

ok thanks. I was going from the speer manual that came with my press. I still dont under stand why it was a compressed load with 24.5 gr. of powder and the manual didnt say it was. is there different textures to the powder or is IMR 4064 just that, no variations in the pellet sizes?

All 4064 is the same size. The manuals generally only tell you it's compressed if it's HEAVILY compressed. You'd probably be better off buying some varget. It's the best all round powder I've found. Though if you just want to use up the 4064 don't worry about the compressed load. You might want to make sure your scale was zeroed right though.

go with 23 grains, if it cycles your action, and it probably will, it should be fine. i've found most reduced loads are my most accurate loads.
