Many in here have indicated they consider XM193, and now XM855, as sub-par ammunition. I was wondering why, it's not PD?

I actually prefer 193.

Good Luck

I wouldn't shoot anything that didn't say Blackhills or TAP on it!

I've found most of the masturbators who talk XM193 down are probably trying to project a myth in order to keep the demand down and availability up.

This crap was worse a year or so ago.  There would be a few ass monkies who would claim they had 5 failure to fires out of their case of XM193.

Yet, hundreds of thousands of other rounds fired by guys here were flawless.  GIMME A BREAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAK!

XM193 is rock solid ammo.  True SHTF reliable.  This is proven.

Is there better ammo?  Sure.  But XM193 is absolutely NOT sub-par.

I use better ammo for defense or target shooting and cheaper ammo for full auto blasting or close range practice.  Does not serve much of a purpose to me... certainly not for what it is going for nowdays.

I agree that I wouldn't pay the current price for it.

IN MY EXPERIENCE, the later XM193 (>2005 or so) seemed to be more prone to problems due to dirt/grunge/dings/dents than some of the EARLIER XM193 I picked up in the late 90's and early 2000's... I would say the QC went down some as the huge demand placed a strain on the infrastructure, as well as maybe more "scrapped" ammo being considered as XM quality rather than discarded.

XM193 is good stuff though, but I shoot my later stuff and keep the earlier and much more purt'ier XM for when I run out of the grungy stuff...

Kinda new here, but how come no Blackhills or Tap in ammo review? Had no problems with xm193 and consider it good ammo.

I have some 05' stuff and it looks good.  So is the 06' and up stuff a little more beat up or discolored worse?  I haven't acutally seen any 06' or later XM193.

ALL of the XM193 I have seen isn't pretty like Q3131A though.  XM193 has been great stuff for me and I have had no problems with it.

The most recent XM193 I purchased was '06 and it's as clean looking as any other I have.

All mine came in the white or (more recently) brown Federal-marked boxes. Not polished, but good looking, solid, reliable ammo. It's pretty much all I shoot, and has never let me down.

My son and I have shot about 15K of XM193 and never had one problem with it.  The rest of my XM193 stash is on the do not touch list.  Gonna save it.  When someone at the range has a AR that's having problems with functioning or cycling I give them a mag of XM 193 to try & see if it's the gun or the ammo they are using.  The XM 193 has functioned perfectly every persons rifle I did this with.

I've put about 2k rounds of XM193 through my RRA ET, and its been rock solid so far. no failure to fire. Its great stuff.

XM193 is decent ammo, but it's not the "Holy Grail of 5.56mm"
6/9/2007 12:22:45 PM EDT
[#18]
What is the Holy Grail of 5.56 then if it's not xm193?
6/9/2007 12:31:02 PM EDT
[#19]
IMO there is no one Holy Grail as there are too many and different ammos for different guns and different uses, High Power, self defense, plinking, 3 Gun, zombies etc.

I like the 193 for plinking and 3 Gun. The others require different bullets.
No one magic bullet.

Good Luck

I have 2 cases of XM193 stashed and have fired several other cases this past year.  I chronoed it vs issued M193 and there was not a dang bit of difference.  I put these results on AR15 a couple of years ago.

The ONLY problem I have with XM193 is the current price for it.

The latest XM855 I got was all head stamped 06, lose in the box/per 1k.  Wideners was selling this last summer, I got mine from GT Distributors.  I haven't had a problem with this either.

Back in the good old days of 2-3 years ago, I preferred Q3131A over XM193, but not by much.  Either could be had for under $150 per thousand.  Both were good, my guns liked the Q3131A a wee bit more than the XM193.

Now I wish I had bought 20K of each!

I totally agree!!  I enjoy XM193 and M855, although my rifle is more accurate with the slightly heavier 62 gr. M855.

Dammit, dude, shhhh!  If everybody starts thinking it's trash, the price comes down!
Then I will have to start buying it again rather than cranking out 68 and 75 grain goodness.
