If you could only have one type of 5.56 round and this round had to be used for everything, Hard Targets, Self Defense, Hunting.... and so on. What would it be? 55grFMJ? 62gr HP? Whatever? Please keep cost and availability in mind. Obviously the latest and greatest round costing $2 each would be nice but not a realistic option, for me anyway. The reason I ask is I am a 7.62 NATO and 7.62x39 fan, but have added 5.56 to the collection, and like everyone here I have many different rounds for different tasks, but if I had to make a quick choice, the small stash of Portuguese in 200rnd packs I have would be my pick for 7.62 NATO. So what would it be? |

5.56 TAP as it is not too expensive (under .75 a round is my personal limit on bulk ammo purchases so something like 62 grain Federal Tactical is out) nor hard to get (mail order only but I buy all my rifle ammo via mail order anyway). Last on my list of possibilites would be M855. Not very accurate, less effective range than M193, costs more than M193, less penetration at realsistic ranges than M193, less relliable fragmentation than M193, etc. |

I have shot so much of the XM193 (55gr FMJ BT) that I really would feel comfortable with that if it were all I had... I would prefer the M855 however. Still, I would never limit myself like that... I have boxes of ammo in everything from 55-gr to 77-gr and each has a specific potential use. I just don't shoot my 5.56 75-gr TAP ammo like I do my cheap stuff... |
