Define large amount?  It would depend on where to point you.

Do you want brand new at $600 per 1000 or surplus at $50 per 1000? (Rhetorical question)

Do you hae a full auto or semi 42?  If full auto, I would not be looking for the cheapest ammo.  Consider your "investment."  Even the semi costs a chunk of change.  I am told to avoid the Turkish surplus ammo anyway.  By the way, are you interested in buying some Turkish surplus ammo?  I have 20K rounds!!!!    AAhhhggggg.

Are you talking in general or just with the MG42?  I LOVE Turk surplus, but I got into the game too late to catch the 4.2cents/round Turk 8mm.  My K98 devours that stuff and loves it.

Sure wish you were closer.  I've got a DLO 1919 set up with 8mm.  The Turk works well in it.  Right now I'm fat with 50's Yugo, but no Turk.  You don't make it to central IL or the St Louis area by chance, do you?

BTW, I wouldn't shoot Turk in a transferrable MG42!

There's not much 8mm out there, I've also been purchasing any that I can find, the only place that will have it is Wideners when they get another shipment in within a month ( www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=3927&dir=18|190|191 ).  You kind of missed the boat on purchasing 8mm, what remains out there is super pricey relative to what it use to cost ($0.06 / round vs. $0.14 / round -- though that's not expensive).  Online ammo merchants like AIM and Century have been telling everyone for a while that 8mm will simply disappear (we're there).

I think the days of the extra cheap 8mm (like .308surplus, 7.62*39, etc) are over. I don't think nobody makes it anymore unlike 7.62*54. Sure glad I stocked up on as much of the Century Yugo $50/case as I could.

10K of 8mm in a MG-42 will last about 9 minutes

There is no cheap ammo anymore

My grandfather just gave me his Mauser now I think I will just shoot it 3 times a year.  I shoot the surplus and buy 3-4 boxes of oftpoint or hollowpoint to put back in stock.  I am doing that woth my Enfields now.  I need to get a mosin.

Don't get too down.  Cruise the gunshows.  You may not be able to get it shipped for 45/K but it does still show up occasionally.

If it makes you feel any better, my printer is sitting on 5 cases of 8mm. It makes a nice table.

Aside from the occasional website, gun shows are the best bet around here. I love the yugo 196 gr: even though it is FMJ, the bullet is long and wide and makes a mess when it tumbles.
