Never shot it before... purchased 1k and took a mag of it to the ranch junk yard. popped through 1/4 inch steel like nothing. My AE .223 just put a good dent in it. Broke a concrete block in half with two shots... this stuff is no F'ing joke!! When I get my xm193 in I'll take some pictures of the three different loads and what they do to various junk we have piled up. |

It's some pretty hot stuff. Next time you shoot both, take note of the recoil as well. Just posted this in another thread, might as well let it out here... Pumpkins-O-Truth |
+2...I love hearing actual accounts from our brave fighting men that have used this round in the field. I often think much of the criticism of the M855 comes from Monday morning quarterbacks with no actual live info on the terminal ballistics of the round but rather just book hypothesis on what it "should" do. |
I have heard a lot of people say that but when I fired some XM193 at a 1/2 steel plate all it did was make a pockmark about the size of a pea. When I switched to some M855 same size pockmark but with a hole all the way through. Range was about 35 yards. Wish I had a camera that day. |
Ahhhhh! YOU KILLED THE GREAT PUMPKIN!!!!!!!! |
|
And what a great pumpkin it was! There was one though that I didn't get a picture of on a different trip where I experienced the "icepick" effect. That was weird. I've heard up to 10% of 855 rounds will do that, but that's only my inexperienced monday morning quarterbacking. ETA: I just wanted to say that, I think that 855 is great! |
+1 Had same experience |
Interesting! I'll have to run some more tests of my own and see how it pans out. Thanks for the input |
I would not shoot steel plates at 35 yards with M855. A little risky but maybe thats just me. |
I found these interesting little tidbits from an ATK spec for M855...

I have shot a 1" mild steel plate with my Mini 14 several times at 100 yds. With the M193 stuff I have it made a 1/4" deep dent and didn't do much more than that. The M855 that I have drilled a hole deep enough to make a bulge on the backside of the plate. The only other rounds that did that were 30 caliber. None of the 30's made it through either, until I brought some AP and it was swiss cheese! I wouldn't mind picking up a plate of the same cheap steel and do it again. |
