I'm clueless when it comes to headstamp markings and I'm hoping someone can tell me about some ammo I recently purchased. Going in a clockwise position, starting at 12 o'clock.... 24, Z, 80, T Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It helps to post what calibre it is. Here are some possibilities:- 24 means 1924 manufacture or is an ident number used by Norma (Sweden) or a machine / lot number Z means Nitro - cellulose propellant or an ident used by Czechoslovakia 80 means 1980 manufacture or a lot / machine number T is an ident from Tula (Russia) or Thun (Switzerland) or Toledo (Spain). So, there are several variations, knowing the calibre or packaging helps a lot! |
it's 1980 produced Israeli and I'm quessing it's 5.56 M193. Does it come in a wedge shaped brown cardboard box? I had some of that exact ammo from 1980, it's good ammo and it was loaded very hot |

It's Israeli and was produced in 1980. The "24" is not a factory code, that is what the "TZ" is. The number 24 refers to the case forming station on the SCAMP loading machine the ammunitin was produced on. US ammo made on SCAMP machines uses a dot code, the Israelis used a number instead of dots for a while, but went back to dots eventually. AKMS |
Thanks for setting me straight on that. I was assuming that IMI had numerous facilities making ammo and that's what the 24 meant. My ignorance abounds. h.gif I am amazed that I have studied and learned so much about ammunition over the years, and yet, I still seem to know so very little. |
