I am a newbie when it comes to long guns.  But, I am a wanting to buy a military style modern battle rifle.  I have looked at the AK's, but like the versatility of the AR platform.  If I buy an AR in 7.62X39 will I be able to fire CommBloc ammo in it?  Would I be able to buy an different upper and convert it to 5.56?  Sorry for the green questions.

Yes you can use comblock ammo in it, and yes you can buy 5.56 uppers for it.

The problem is finding reliable magazines that work with 7.62x39 in the AR platform.  Right now they are few and far between.

Personally I'll suggest you get the 5.56 AR first, then after C-Products releases their 7.62x39 AR magazines you buy a 7.62x39 upper.

I'd get the 5.56 AR.

Then, if you want something that shoots AK ammo - buy an AK.

If it is the caliber you seek (something in the 7.62 family) and you really like the AR style, a suggestion would be the Armalite AR-10 with the 16" barrel, carbine model, priced around $1500 retail. The mechanics are generally the same and it only weighs about a pound more than the M-15.

If he waits until C Products comes out with their AR 7.62x39 Mags, the price of an AR-15 in 7.62x39 could double in price.  I own one and love the AR-15 to 7.62x39 match.  To tell you the truth, I’d rather own one in the 7.62x39 cal over the .223/5.56.

How would mag availability "double" the price of the AR?  What part of the AR production would go up due to mags becoming available?

I could see a short term issue with demand going up slightly.... but it aint like everyone is going to jump on 7.62x39 AR barrels overnight.
