| Anyone had any experience (good or bad) with Monarch .223 from Academy Sports? |
| The blue box is the absolute cheapest plinking ammo I've been able to find, on the net or on the ground. I've had one instance where the round was kind of "glued" to the chamber by gunpowder residue, and had a failure to extract: the ammo is about as dirty as one would expect from a steel cased russian production. But if you keep your rifle reasonably clean you shouldnt experience that problem. |

i've used the green box. around $6.00 here not great shoots ok and no problems so far. it is way to dirty, picked up some ss109 last weekend and was amazed at how clean it was compared to the monarck. also shoot the white box winchester {walmart} it is also dirty but no problems but the price. |
you got that right. But it must be because of the war 'eh? |

They're both good products. The enormous price jump Academy did on both has dampened my enthusiasm for Academy, but not either the blue or green box ammo. I can't count how many boxes of the blue box stuff have gone down range through my AR. Yum. The green box stuff just started showing up at the local Academy in time for me to get about 100 rounds before they I think (hint, hint) that if any of the mail order ammo places got a deal with the Monarch/Barnaul/Prvi folks and started selling it that way, they'd make a financial killing just from ARFCOMers, and maybe send Academy a message. |
| Excuse my ignorance. I bought some Barnaul 62gr hp in a box with a guy with a "cowboy" hat on / blue/white box. Steel jacket/case green laquer. is that the same as Monarch? I am pretty sure I paid $27/300 shipped back in the day. I havent seen Monarch around here. |
That cowboy dude with his lever action rifle is the giveaway-it's the same box, just a different name on it. The PITA about this whole thing is that not only has Academy's price on .223 gone stupid, it's affected their 7.62X39 prices and thus availability. I used to go through that AK fodder like candy because it was about $3 a box... This is Academy's loss, because I haven't been in the store for months because of their stupid prices. |
That's weird: I've noticed this in the Academy in Tuscaloosa (where there are more rural residents close) but the Academy in nice suburban Hoover seems to always have the blue box in stock. Of course both places have PLENTY of the green box |
| I shot both the steel case and the brass (plated?, couldn't remember) case through my Colt. Steel case shot best out of the two, but that's not saying much. t didn't like either. FTF about every 4 or 5th rd. I shot Winchester with no problems at all. Unfortunately its not something I would buy any more. |

This is odd. Academy in Fort Worth (820Loop) has some monarch green box and a lot of them but they won't honor the price on the back of the box $3.86. It is not even covered and on the shelve, the price is double of that. Maybe someone else will want to start a fit with the manager to see if they do honor it. |
HA! I was there myself today. I bought a new pair of Bates work shoes. Did you notice that the green box $6.86 ammo was the only .223 ammo on the shelf? what a shame, I loved shooting up that monarch ammo, now it can rot on the shelves. |

I love the blue box stuff but they tend to run out pretty quick (I'm the main culprit). I just checked the green box stuff works out to $382 per 1K (.0925% sales tax) I can think of lots of stuff for way cheaper. if it was some good 75gr hp I might think about it but just plain 55gr no way. I might ask the store mgr if he'll honer the price on the box if I buy it all tomarrow. just to help them move it. |
Same here in Houston, once the price went up on the green box the blue boxed stuff hasn't been back. It's shame to, I loved that stuff, oh well the green boxed brass can sit there, I'm not paying $7 a box for that. |

The blue box Monarch is listed on Academy's web site for $2.86/box for both the .223 and the 7.62x39. A buddy of mine just ordered a Yuko SKS, so we were out on the net pricing x39 ammo, and found it listed there for that price. While I was out there browsing around I happened to notice the .223 for the same money. That works out to around $150/1000 by the time you add taxes. It was so cheap (compared to the stuff I usually shoot) that I decided to do a search for Monarch ammo on the forums to see if it was any good or not and found this thread. I think we're going by Academy at lunch tomorrow so my buddy can by a case or so of the x39 stuff, and I'm going to check on the .223 stuff. I thought I might try it if they have any of it in stock. |
