| I just got an lr308 ap4 and I'm currently deployed so I haven't got to shoot it yet. But when I get back I don't want to mess up the barrel when I break it in. I heard somewhere not to use fmj but to use hpbt which I assume means hollow point boat tail. My question is what commercially availible ammo that will meet that requirment should I purchase also if its not to much trouble could someone explain why that is if it is in fact true thanks alot for your time. |

As far as breaking in the barrel is concerned, there will be no difference between FMJ and BTHP. The latter makes for more accurate ammo, but that's about it. Opinions of barrel break-in vary. If it's chrome lined, don't bother. Rock River Arms laps their barrels and specifically mentions that break-in is not required. I believe the consensus is that breaking in a barrel in the traditional way (shoot, clean, repeat) is to remove the sharp edges left after the chamber is reamed. Another option is to use the special bullets that come in a Tubbs kit. Some people think those are the cat's meow. I suppose the only way to settle the issue would be to take some rifles that came off of the assembly line, shoot some of them without cleaning, and some of them with the shoot/clean/repeat process and see what (if any) the difference in group size is. For your .308 - which isn't meant as a precision rifle, I'd just shoot it, then clean normally. Just get some decent FMJ surplus for plinking, and try some 168BTHPs if you're interested in seeing how accurate it it. |
