| As the weight of a bullet goes up (55 vs. 62 vs. 77, etc.) does the effective range or "kill range" if you will, go up as well. I know that the different tips such as hollow point or soft point will influence this, but what type of ranges are we talking about. I know that M193 coming out of a 16" barrel has a range of around 100-150 yards. But what about some of these other bullets. What would work best at the 250+ yard range for pest control (coyote and deer) and possibly SHTF situations. |

Q: What works best at 250+ yards for terminal ballistics? A: A caliber other than 5.56mm! The longest fragmenting range and the best terminal ballistics will be the 75 grain 5.56 pressure (not .223 pressure) Hornady TAP ammo for the 5.56 caliber rifle. 77 grain MK262 will have a slightly higher velocity and accuracy at long range and slightly worse (later yaw cycle) termial ballistics and is the #2 choice. Do not expect either ammo to perform well over 250 yards from a terminal ballistics perspective. It will still kill things because putting holes in living things is generally not very good for their health. |
For killing coyote and deer out to 250 yards the best round to use is something that is accurate and still fragment. Assuming you are using a 16" barrel, I would pick a ballistic tip bullet such as the Hornady 55 and 60 Gr. V-Max, the Sierra 55 Gr. Blitzking, or the Nosler 55 Gr. Ballistic Tip. Hornady claims that the 55 Gr. TAP has a Max Performance Range of 300 yards out os a 16" barrel and 275 yards for the 60 Gr. TAP out of the 16" barrel. Since you also want the ammo for SHTF, I'd check into the 55 or 60 Gr. Hornady TAP or the Federal 223F, which is the 55 Gr. Nosler Ballistic Tip. Both the Hornady and the Federal have cannelures which is good for AR's. Some people don't like the Hornady 55 or 60 TAP for SHTF because they don't penetrate enough to their likings, but the Federal T223F penetrates 11.5" out of a 14.5" barrel, which is pretty good. If having the cannelures isn't a big deal to you and you want to save some money, then check out HSM . They make ammo with the Hornady 55 or 60 Gr V-Max and the Sierra 55 Gr Blitzking. Hope this helps some. |
