What is the max length overall for a .223/5.56? Black  Hills (?) has a 80 grain bullet that is sized for 'match throated barrels," which I take it means that the rifling is set back for these "longer" bullets. Is this right?

Most AR ammo has a max length set for meg length, which is 2.260"  Most people, for reliability, dont load over 2.250".

For this 80gr round... the majority do not load them to mag length, but load them longer, and have to single feed them.  My manual calls for a COAL of 2.550", which is substantially longer than a typical AR cartridge.  This round will jam into the rifling of most barrels.  To shoot these, people have a barrel smith cut a custom throat which will accomodate where this bullet sits.  If you arent in competition at the 600yd line and beyond, dont mess with them.
