There was an article in the classified ads section of my local news paper advertising .223 remanufactured ammo. When I called, I talked to a gentleman that was retired and reloaded ammo for extra cash. His prices are very reasonable. You you buy reloads from someone that you know nothing about? If so, what types of questions should I ask?

My advice, don't do it.

Question #1:  tell me about your insurance coverage.

Ie., I'm casting another vote for:  don't do it.

Run away!  Right now.  Don't even think about it.

If you get it extra super cheap, buy it, then pull the components, keep the primers and projectiles, sell the brass for scrap, burn the powder for grins and giggles.  4-5 cents a round would be my target buying price (pun!)

Ask him if he has an SAMMI pressure gun, and if the pressures meet SAMMI standards.  If he does, then he won't have cheap reloads.

I won't shoot any "remanufactured" ammo.  I will shoot my own handloads, but never someone elses.  (Reputable ammunition companys excepted---sort-of.)

Bwollard, these pics are for you.

Maine Cartridge Company "remanufactured ammunition" - nothing more than Notoriously bad reloads - and what was once a nice Bushmaster XM15E2S - J_Smith (AR15.COM)

Lancer brand "Remanufactured Ammunition"

kevatc (AR15.COM) shooting his own handloads. The rifle was a Bushmaster.

Quarterbore (AR15.COM) hosted these pics of a member's KB. He said this EA15 was destroyed by faulty reloads.

DAMN. What kind of powder were they using, so I know what to avoid. So far I've had good luck with both Ramshot exterminator and AA 2520. But DAMN

I might trust a company that puts their name on the package and stands behind their product, but not some guy loading stuff in his basement.  (although I trust my own loads)

Run Forrest, run.

Lancer and Maine Cartridge Company both put their names on the package.

I purchased from the same gentlemen in question i believe. Shot 60rds 2wks ago. no Failures of any kind out of my Dpms 16" m-4. and 30rds out of my SAR-3. recoil is comparable to wolf. Anything other than my Gaut,S&B and Q3131 is underloaded. His stuff is great for plinking. I picked up 1k almost a month ago for $120.  910ds to go I only tried his stuff be cause a buddy(Sheriff) recomended his loads.

And I'm about halfway thorugh 1,000 rounds of Lancer 223.  I don't have second thoughts about squeezing off remanufactured ammo.

That isn't anymore meaningful than posting pics of a GLOCK KB.  Like posting a pic of a certain model care that has rolled over and killed the driver and vowing to never drive that model care because so-and-so was killed in one.  I've seen pics of 1911's, HK's, even revolvers that were FUBARed.  That won't keep me from shooting those model weapons, or firing remanufactured ammo.  Doesn't stop me from rolling my own at home either.

Hey, it's your rifle. Have at it. But I'd sooner drop a blasting cap and a wad of C4 in my chamber than shoot MCC or Lancer out of any of my rifles.

Here are some pics and account of another arfcommer who blew up his AR15 using Lancer quality ammo.

As I remember. Lancer didn't step up to the plate when their ammo Kb'ed that rifle.

And neither did MCC.

End of discussion.

I think someone is firing rounds with a squib in the barrel. I think that is the real lesson here. ANY change in the feel or sound of firing, check your bore!

Never.  Shoot.  Someone.  Else's.  Handloads.  EVER.

"Reloaded" ammunition from a known source (a large remanufacturer, for example) is a different animal, but handloads should be a personal thing.  Don't do it.  Don't bother with even buying the stuff for components unless it's dirt cheap.

_DR,
We can agree to disagree on this issue.
Are KB's more likely with Re-man ammo than Factory Fresh?  Without question, YES.
Is reman ammo dangerous?  No, too many safe reloads out there.
Hey, Volvo's are safer than Hondas, but that doesn't mean Hondas are dangerous.

But some brands of reman ammo are markedly safer than others. When was the last time you heard of a Black Hills related KB? I'm not disparaging the right of anyone to buy any ammo they want, so long as they understand there is more risk with certain ammo. MMC is one of the worst, IMO. Lancer had a good reputation until recently.
Of course unknown handloads are like Russian Routlette.

The difference between a Honda car and some reman ammo is consistency of product. The last time I bought MCC ammo for my .45, i had two rounds that barely popped the bullet out, and a third that almost knocked the slide off the frame. At that point I threw the rest in the live ammo disposal bucket, and swore off reman.

But as long as the shooter is aware of the risk, then there is nothing wrong with it.  We all take risks one way or another, it's just that this is not one I choose to take.

I wonder if the old man realizes what he is doing requires a license else he might get to spend his remaining days at club fed?

I was wondering about that, since I always see someone at gun shows with Ziplock bags full of their reloads for sale.  I always thought you needed some form of license to produce ammo for sale.

I've never understood why some people will actually entertain the idea of using some cheap reloads of unknown quality.  I just really don't get it.
