It looks like we may be going out to Wyoming for a VERY late session p-dog hunt. I don't think i want to hand load up 1k rounds in two weeks so I am looking at buying a case of manufactured. So what kind of round should I be looking at? I was thinking about buying a case of the WWB 40 round value packs, however I have not shot those past 80 yards and that was a LONG time ago. Suggestions welcome!

Thanks

YMMV, but as PD hunting generally involves long range shooting, I have always used a round that shoots accurately at long range in my long range AR, that's my custom loaded 77grn SMKs.

I have no clue what type of rifle your shooting, the barrel twist or how your rifle groups w/ the Winchester value box ammo.

That said I have fired the 45grn Winney value box thru my LR AR, but my rifle prefers the BH 52grn SMKs or the 55grn V-max by Hornady and neither of them really group anywhere close to the 77s past 300 yards, (too much wind drift on the lite rounds IMO).

Mike

ps - buy the rounds your rifle shoots best past 300 yards is my advice....

Ok well my AR is a 1/9" 20" J&T upper. I may just have to pick up a few boxes of potential ammo and see how they shoot.

Thanks

I "had" to buy a 2nd hand Bushy 24" heavy varmint 1:9 rig two years ago to meet my son in southeast Colorado for some doggin.  I tried about 4 Black Hills loads before I left home.  My rifle loves the 60gr V-max.  That load may be a little heavy for "Red Mist" hits but it is extremely accurate (in my gun.)  During the shoot my son lasered a fence post that I tacked a target to at 330 yds.  I did one 5 shot group at 1 1/2".  I used a 6-24 power Sightron scope.  I don't know how long our farthest shots were but the 60 gr. will give you a few more yards.  There was little to no wind and the weather was crisp and cool in April.  I highly recommend Black Hills.htlift.gif

If you have time, buy a box of several different rounds and find out what your gun likes.  Mine didn't like the Black Hills 50gr V-Max or the 52gr Hollow Point.  I would suggest that you not stock up until you have tried several loads.  Fortunately, on our drive to Colorado we stopped at Midway USA in Missouri and stocked up after I found the right round.

Go HERE.  A couple of buddies and I ordered 2,000 rounds for our trip to SD this past June.  We got the 52 grn Speer Match BTHP for $250/thousand-loose packed in ammo cans.  Great stuff. They also sell 55grn Nosler ballistic tip for around $320/thousand.

Give 'em a call, nice people.
