I have shot regular ammo from the 40`s But do TRACERS have a Self Life the M856 I got in 2001 Has spots on the neck on some? I wonder if it is the compound? |

Ive bought M193/M855 since the 80`s I know what sealant looks like The necks of the Brass was fine when I bought them. but Now are Brown spots like TARNISH at the NECK ONLY They were stored Fine? wonder if its the compound since its only at the Neck BTW LC 88 head stamp I like the older style head stamp compared to the New head stamp Very easy to see Also the LC 88 Brass seems to be heavier than the 99/06 LC brass |

I buy up those Vietnam surplus M196 tracers and load them because they are cheap. Most distributors claim that 20 to 30 percent will light. With the right powder, I believe that out of a mag of 20 maybe 1 or 2 wont light. Thats prety good. I would think that as long as moisture doesnt get to the tracer material, they should light. For the price that your M856 tracers bring, I would expect them all to work. I have loaded some pretty ugly M196s and they all worked fine. The guy at Pat's reloading told me to poke a small hole in the cap covering the tracer material if they arent lighting. Hope this helps. Turk |

I really didnt want the Tracers at all They came on a Belt/ Links I wanted the M855 whats Wierd back then was it was WIN M855 and every forth round was Lake city M856 I guess WIN dont make TRACERS ? (or back then) all of them go off when I shot some of them and at 100 yards I shot pretty good groups out of my 1/9 Bushy A1 Shorty |
So the mixture wouldnt cause the Neck only Spots |
I think that could definitly be a possibility. I checked some WC 96 M856s that I had stashed for a couple years and I didnt notice any unusual spotting on the case necks. Is it possible that they use different sealer on tracers? Or maybe the factory had some bad brass? You wouldnt think that the tracer compount which is sealed in the bullet would have any effect on the brass itself but then again, if it is only happening on the tracer rounds there could be some corelation.
